About native american tribe names
There are 574 federally recognized tribes and nations in the United States alone, plus more than 600 First Nations in Canada and hundreds of state-recognized and unrecognized communities. Most have at least two names: the one they call themselves (an endonym) and the one outsiders attached to them. Navajo people are Diné ('the People'); the Sioux are Lakota, Dakota or Nakota; the Nez Perce are Nimiipuu; the Crow are Apsáalooke ('children of the large-beaked bird'); the Mohawk are Kanien'kehá:ka ('people of the flint'). Many English names come from what neighbors called them, sometimes unflatteringly, which is why nations increasingly use their own names in official titles.
Structurally, most tribal names are just a people-word: Anishinaabe means 'original people', Numunuu (Comanche) means 'the people', Ohlone comes from a village name. Others reference a place (Tohono O'odham, 'desert people'), a language family (Athabascan), or a confederacy (Haudenosaunee, 'people of the longhouse', covering six nations). Larger nations divide further into bands and clans, such as the Oglala, Sicangu and Hunkpapa Lakota.
This list gives real names only, mixing well-known nations with smaller ones from every region: Southwest pueblos, Northwest Coast, the Plains, the Great Basin, California, the Great Lakes, the Northeast and Southeast. Use it to identify a nation for research or to ground a story in a real place and people rather than a made-up 'tribe'.
Tips for choosing a name
- When writing about a nation, use its own name (Diné, Nimiipuu, Kanien'kehá:ka) at least once and check the spelling on the nation's official website; many have official orthographies with apostrophes and diacritics.
- Match the nation to the geography of your story: the Quileute and Makah are Olympic Peninsula peoples, the Hopi and Zuni are Southwest pueblos, the Ojibwe are Great Lakes.
- Remember that 'tribe' is a legal term in the US; many communities prefer 'nation' or 'people', and Alaska Native and Canadian First Nations use different terms again.
- Avoid inventing a fictional tribe with a name that sounds Native (like 'Wakoda' or 'Tashani'); if you need a fictional people, set them in a fictional world instead.
- Look beyond the famous few: the Coushatta, Passamaquoddy, Karuk and Ho-Chunk are just as real and far less written about.
Frequently asked questions
How many Native American tribes are there?
As of 2024 there are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States, around 60 state-recognized tribes without federal status, and more than 630 First Nations in Canada, plus many unrecognized communities.
What is the difference between a tribe's English name and its own name?
English names were often borrowed from neighboring peoples or European traders. Sioux comes from an Ojibwe word via French, while the people call themselves Lakota, Dakota or Nakota. Many nations now use their own name officially, e.g. Diné (Navajo), Apsáalooke (Crow) and Wazhazhe (Osage).
Can I use a real tribe name for a fictional group in my novel or game?
You can name real nations in fiction set in the real world, and doing so accurately is better than inventing a stereotyped tribe. For fantasy settings, don't attach a real nation's name to a fictional culture; create original names that don't imitate specific Native languages.
What are the largest Native American tribes today?
By enrollment, the Navajo Nation (Diné) and Cherokee Nation are the largest, each with roughly 400,000 citizens, followed by the Choctaw, Chippewa (Ojibwe), Sioux (Lakota/Dakota/Nakota), Apache and Blackfeet nations.
