Orc Clan Name Generator

Orc clan names in the major fantasy franchises follow one of four patterns. Warcraft's Draenor clans use a two-word compound describing a wound, a weapon or a totem: Frostwolf, Warsong, Bleeding Hollow, Shattered Hand, Burning Blade, Blacktooth Grin. Tolkien's orcs are grouped by master and territory (the Uruk-hai of Isengard, the Orcs of Gundabad, the White Hand, the Red Eye) rather than by named clans. Dungeons & Dragons orcs name tribes after their god Gruumsh and his pantheon (Blade of Gruumsh, Fangs of Bahgtru, Many-Arrows). Warhammer's greenskins throw grammar away entirely: Da Bad Moonz, Bloody Sun Boyz, Grimgor's Immortulz, or simply Waaagh followed by the warboss's name.

What these share is a body-part-plus-violence vocabulary. Skull, fang, tusk, jaw, hand, eye and blood combine with breaker, splitter, gnaw, howl and crusher, and the result is a clan whose name is also a threat. Totem animals matter too: wolves, boars, wyverns and carrion birds are the beasts orcs ride, hunt or revere, and a rider clan (Wargrider, Wyvernrider) tells you how they fight.

When naming your own clan, pick one idea and commit. A clan named for its founder (Sons of Grommash) is loyal and dynastic; a wound-name (Gouged Eye, Severed Hand) records a defining event or ritual; a place-name (Cold Fell, Ash Waste) marks a homeland. Add Clan, Tribe, Warband or Horde depending on size, and use an orcish word (Grokthar Warband) when the clan is meant to feel foreign to your players.
