Holy City Name Generator

Real holy cities are named in a handful of recognisable ways, and borrowing those habits is the fastest route to a name that feels genuinely sacred rather than merely grand. Many simply mean "the holy one" or "the sanctuary": Al-Quds, Ir HaKodesh, Hierapolis, Kashi. Others take the name of a saint, prophet or founder (St Davids, Sergiyev Posad, Santiago de Compostela), a sacred object or relic (Kandy, city of the Tooth Relic), or the mountain and spring the shrine was built around (Koyasan, Montserrat, Mount Athos). Epithets do the rest: City of Peace, City of Lights, the Bright Mound.

This generator mixes those layers. You will find invented names with a liturgical ring for fantasy capitals (Sanctis Vael, Hallowmere, Kirith Ammar), descriptive titles like City of Seven Bells or the Pilgrim's Crown, and names built on real religious vocabulary: Beth and Kiryat from Hebrew, Dar and Bayt from Arabic, Sancta and Mons from Latin, Hagia from Greek, Debre from Ge'ez, Tiru and Dham from South Asia, Kil and Llan from Celtic church towns.

For worldbuilding, decide what made the place holy first: a relic, a martyrdom, a vision, a natural wonder. The name should point at that origin, and the everyday short form pilgrims actually use (the Seat, the Mount, the Rock) is often the most memorable version.
