Generate monastery names modeled on real houses of the Benedictine, Cistercian, Carthusian, Orthodox, and Buddhist traditions: saint dedications, Latin place-names, and evocative fantasy retreats. Useful for historical fiction, D&D campaigns, and worldbuilding.
About monastery names
Real monasteries are named in a small number of predictable ways, and knowing them makes an invented one sound authentic. Most Western houses carry a dedication: Abbey of Saint Benedict, Priory of the Holy Trinity, Monastery of the Transfiguration. Others take the name of their place, especially in Britain, where Fountains, Rievaulx, Tintern, and Whitby are all simply the abbey at that spot. Orthodox monasteries on Mount Athos and in the Balkans are commonly known by a founder or patron (Vatopedi, Hilandar, Studenica), while Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, Japan, and China are named for the mountain, the founding lineage, or an image such as the Tiger's Nest.
The word in front matters too. An abbey is a large, independent house ruled by an abbot or abbess; a priory is smaller and often dependent on an abbey; a charterhouse (chartreuse, certosa) is a Carthusian house of hermits; a lavra is a great Orthodox community; a skete or hermitage is a tiny cell of a few monks; a convent usually houses nuns.
For fantasy settings, the formula still holds: pick a form (Abbey, Priory, Cloister, Hermitage), then attach either a saint, a virtue, or a stark landscape feature. Priory of Blackwater Fell and Monastery of the Unbroken Bell sound lived-in because they follow the real pattern.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the institution word first: abbey for a wealthy, powerful house, priory for a modest one, hermitage or skete for a handful of ascetics on a cliff.
- Landscape names (Fountains, Thornmere, Grey Tarn) suggest an old foundation in wild country; saint dedications suggest a house in or near a town.
- For historical fiction, match the order to the era and region: Cistercian valley names for 12th-century France, Benedictine saint names for early medieval England, Carmels for post-1600 convents.
- In fantasy, invent a saint (Saint Elowen, Saint Aldric the Quiet) and dedicate the house to them; it implies a whole calendar of feast days and legends behind the name.
- Keep the name pronounceable in dialogue; characters will refer to it constantly, so 'the Priory' or 'Thornmere' should work as a shortened form.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an abbey, a priory, and a monastery?
Monastery is the general term for any community of monks or nuns. An abbey is a self-governing monastery headed by an abbot or abbess, while a priory is headed by a prior and is usually smaller or subordinate to an abbey. Convent typically refers to a house of nuns or friars.
How were medieval monasteries actually named?
Most were dedicated to a saint, to Mary, or to a feast such as the Holy Cross or the Trinity, and were referred to by that dedication or simply by the place where they stood. Cistercian foundations often received poetic Latin names for their valley, such as Clairvaux (clear valley) or Bonneval (good valley).
Are these names suitable for a D&D or fantasy monastery?
Yes. The invented entries at the end of the list (Priory of the Winter Cross, Monastery of the Iron Psalter, Cloudrest Monastery) were built for fantasy settings, and the real Christian, Orthodox, and Buddhist names work as templates for a monk class's home temple or a Cleric's order.
Can I use a real monastery's name in my story?
Real place names are not protected, so a novel can be set at Fountains Abbey or Mount Athos. If you are creating a business, retreat centre, or product, avoid the name of an existing active monastery, since some (Buckfast, Chimay, Andechs) are also registered brands for their goods.
