About holy book names

Real scriptures are named in only a few ways, and fictional holy books feel authentic when they copy the pattern. Many are simply a proper noun that means something in the founding language: Torah (teaching), Quran (recitation), Avesta, Vedas (knowledge), Tripitaka (three baskets). Others name the form of the text, such as the Book of the Dead, the Analects, the Psalms, the Sutras, the Tablets of Destiny, or the Gospel according to someone. A third group is named for a prophet, a place, or the moment of revelation. Long compound titles suggest an organised church with scribes; a bare word like the Kethal suggests an ancient, oral faith whose name predates writing.

  • Keep one-word titles short and pronounceable (the Kethal, the Vaskari); players and readers will use them constantly, and a long invented word will get shortened anyway.
  • Avoid titles that directly echo real scriptures unless the parallel is deliberate; a fictional 'Book of Revelation' reads as a placeholder rather than a creation.
