Draw real US cities and towns paired with their states, such as Flagstaff, Arizona; Duluth, Minnesota; and Savannah, Georgia. The list holds 1,000 places, 20 from each of the 50 states.

About city and state names

Americans write a place as city, comma, state because the city alone is often not enough. This list holds three Springfields (Illinois, Massachusetts and Missouri), two Portlands (Maine and Oregon) and five places called Columbus, in Ohio, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi and Nebraska. Every entry keeps that standard pattern, with the state spelled out in full rather than as a two-letter postal code, so Charleston, West Virginia is never mistaken for Charleston, South Carolina.

The 1,000 entries are real US cities and towns, split evenly: 20 from each of the 50 states. Wyoming, Vermont and Delaware come up as often as California and Texas, which suits a quiz or a road-trip draw better than a list weighted by population. Each state's share holds its capital and largest cities along with college towns, resort and beach towns, mountain and river towns, and small places with a famous name, such as Tombstone, Arizona; Deadwood, South Dakota; and Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. A few entries, like Hershey, Pennsylvania and Big Sky, Montana, are well-known communities rather than incorporated cities.

Use a draw as a geography question, a destination for an imaginary trip, a hometown for a character or the setting of a scene. The page gives the place name only; a map will tell you the rest.

How to choose city and state names

  • Write the state down with the city every time. Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon are a continent apart, and the list has many such pairs.
  • For a classroom game, draw a place and ask for its state capital, a neighboring state or its spot on a blank map. The even split gives every state the same number of turns.
  • Setting a story in a drawn town? Read about the real place first. Marfa, Texas and Bar Harbor, Maine have climates, landscapes and histories that readers may know well.
  • For a road-trip draw, agree on the rules before the first roll: one region only, driving distance only, or anything goes, Alaska and Hawaii included.
  • Use the tool's starts with filter for alphabet games: one place for each letter, each in a different state. No entry starts with X, and Q, U and Z have only one or two, so agree on a free pass for those.

Frequently asked questions

Are the cities and states in this generator real?

Yes. The list is made of real US cities and towns, each written with the state it is in, such as Flagstaff, Arizona; Duluth, Minnesota; and Savannah, Georgia. A few entries are well-known unincorporated communities. Confirm a place on a map before you rely on it for anything that matters.

Does every state get the same number of cities?

Yes. Each of the 50 states has 20 entries, which makes 1,000 in all. A draw is as likely to land in Rhode Island or North Dakota as in Florida, so small states are not crowded out by big ones. Washington, D.C. and the territories are not in the list.

Why does the same city name appear more than once?

Because many American place names repeat from state to state. Springfield, Illinois; Springfield, Massachusetts; and Springfield, Missouri are three different cities, and the list also has a Salem in both Oregon and Massachusetts. The state is part of every entry for that reason.

Are all 50 state capitals included?

Yes. Every capital is in its state's share, from Juneau, Alaska and Pierre, South Dakota to Montpelier, Vermont and Tallahassee, Florida. They sit beside larger cities and small towns, so a capital is not always the first place a state turns up.
