Generate names for invented religions that sound like the real thing: -isms named for founders and doctrines (Aurelianism, Sevenfold Way), state churches and orthodoxies, mystery cults, monastic orders, folk faiths, dualist heresies and modern new-religious movements. For fantasy and sci-fi worldbuilders, D&D pantheons, Crusader Kings and Stellaris players, and novelists.

About religion names

Real religions are named in a handful of predictable ways, and fictional ones feel authentic when they follow the same patterns. Many are named for a founder or central figure with an -ism or -ity ending (Buddhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism); some for their core idea or practice (Islam, "submission"; Shinto, "way of the gods"; Jainism from jina, "conqueror"); some for a people or place (Judaism, Hinduism); and some by outsiders' nicknames that stuck (Quakers, Methodists, Mormons). Institutions get longer names: the Church of X, the Order of Y, the Assembly of Z, the Society of Friends. Heresies and schisms are almost always named by their enemies, so a rebel movement in your world should have one name for itself (the True Church, the Restored Faith) and another that the orthodoxy uses (the Hollowist Heresy, the Marunite Schism).

The most useful trick for worldbuilders is to invent one deity or prophet name and then derive a whole vocabulary from it, exactly as history does: from Sareth you get Sarethianism, the Holy Sarethian Church, the Flagellants of Sareth, the Church Militant of Sareth. Readers absorb the shared root and the world feels older. Pair that with a plain-English descriptive name for the folk version of the faith (the Old Ways, the Faith of the Hearth and Field), and you have both a high church and a peasant religion from one seed.

This generator mixes all these registers: -isms, state churches, mystery cults, monastic orders, dualist heresies, folk faiths, science-fiction creeds and the euphemistic titles of modern new religious movements, so you can pick the tone your setting needs.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give the religion at least two names: the formal name it uses for itself and the short, often slightly rude one everyone else uses (the Universal Church of Aurel vs. "the Wheel-kissers").
  • Derive names from a shared root; a god called Vael gives you Vaelism, the Vaelite Creed, the Chosen of Vael and the Vethric Heresy of those who broke away.
  • Match the grammar to the type: -isms for broad faiths, "Church of" for organised institutions, "Order of" for monastic or military bodies, "Cult of" for small secret groups, plain "the Way" or "the Old Ways" for folk practice.
  • Modern-day cults in fiction rarely call themselves cults; use warm, vague, institutional words like Fellowship, Family, Ministry, Institute or Society (the Family of the Open Door).
  • For sci-fi, blend a religious noun with a technological one and keep it plausibly reverent: the Church of the Signal, the Order of the Star-Pilgrims, the Machine Creed.

Frequently asked questions

How are real religions named?

Usually after a founder or figure (Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism), a core concept (Islam, Shinto), a people or place (Judaism, Hinduism), or a nickname coined by outsiders (Quakers, Methodists). Institutions add words like Church, Order, Assembly or Society.

What makes a fantasy religion name sound believable?

Consistency with the world's language, a real-sounding structure (an -ism, a Church of, an Order of), and evidence of history: rival branches, an orthodoxy and a heresy, and a formal name alongside a folk name.

Can I use these for a D&D, Crusader Kings or Stellaris game?

Yes. The list is built with those uses in mind: -isms and churches for CK3 custom faiths, cults and orders for D&D factions, and machine or void creeds for Stellaris empires.

Are these names free to use in a published book or game?

Yes. All names here are original or generic and are free for commercial use; only avoid names that clearly copy an existing real-world religion or trademark.
