Temple Name Generator

Real temple names almost always tell you two things: who is worshipped there and where it stands. Athens' Parthenon is the house of Athena Parthenos; Kyoto's Kinkaku-ji is simply "Golden Pavilion Temple"; Karnak was called Ipet-isut, "the most select of places." That is why so many names follow the pattern of a building word (temple, shrine, wat, mandir, sanctum, fane) attached to a deity, a virtue, or a striking physical feature such as a bell, a spring, or a mountain.

Each tradition also carries its own suffix. Japanese Buddhist temples end in -ji, -dera, or -in; Shinto shrines are jinja or taisha; Thai temples begin with Wat; Hindu temples end in Mandir or Kovil; Chinese temples take Si or Guan; and Mesopotamian temples began with E-, meaning "house." Borrowing the correct suffix instantly grounds an invented temple in a recognizable culture, while English forms like Emberfane or Sunspire Sanctum suit original fantasy pantheons.

The list above deliberately mixes those registers, from Wat Chai Mongkhon and Kailasanatha Temple to the Sepulchre of the Nameless God, so you can match a name to the tone of a scene, whether it is a serene mountain monastery, a bustling city cathedral, or a ruined fane at the bottom of a dungeon.
