Generate evil sword names for cursed blades, dark lords' weapons and sentient swords that hunger for souls: grim English compounds, dread epithets like Kharzulun, Widow of Kings, and harsh invented names in the tradition of Tyrfing and Stormbringer. Built for D&D, novels and video games.

About evil sword names

Evil swords in myth and fiction are named the way you would name a disaster. The Norse Tyrfing had to kill a man every time it was drawn; Moorcock's Stormbringer and Mournblade devoured souls; Tolkien's Gurthang, forged from a meteorite and renamed Iron of Death, spoke to its owner before he died on it. The names all share a few traits: hard consonants, a meaning rooted in grief, hunger or betrayal, and an implication that the blade is at least as much a character as the hand holding it.

This generator covers the main ways those names are built. Compound English names (Soulrender, Gravewhisper, Kingslayer) read clearly at the table and work well for magic items whose curse is the point. Definite-article titles (The Pale Lament, The Orphan Maker, The Black Verdict) sound like something spoken in a whisper by people who are afraid of it. Harsh invented names (Vethrakal, Kharzulun, Ithraxys) suit sentient weapons, demon-forged blades and anything that predates the common tongue, and an epithet such as Eater of Oaths or Widow of Kings turns any of them into a legend.

You will also find liturgical and funerary vocabulary (Black Vesper, Requiem, Threnody), poisons, carrion birds and gallows imagery, because the most unsettling sword names borrow from the rituals around death rather than from combat.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the curse's mechanics: a soul-drinking blade wants a hungry name (Lifedrinker, Marrowdrinker), while a blade that compels betrayal suits Oathbreaker or The Traitor's Kiss.
  • Give a sentient evil sword an invented true name plus a common-tongue nickname; characters who know the true name should be rare, and speaking it can be a plot point.
  • Keep it pronounceable out loud; your players will say it dozens of times, so Kharzulun beats a name with four apostrophes every time.
  • Let the name foreshadow how the blade ends: a sword called Kingsgrief should eventually cost a king something.
  • Avoid names that are just the word 'dark' or 'shadow' plus 'blade'; the memorable ones hint at a specific crime, grief or ritual.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a sword name sound evil?

Three things carry most of the weight: imagery of death, grief or betrayal rather than combat; hard or hissing sounds such as k, g, th, z and x; and a sense that the blade has its own will, which is why titles like The Hungry Edge or epithets like Eater of Oaths feel more sinister than a simple adjective plus 'sword'.

Can I use these names for a cursed magic item in D&D or Pathfinder?

Yes. Many of the names are written for exactly that: a sentient or cursed weapon handed out as treasure. Pair the name with a mechanical curse (a compulsion, a soul cost, a hunger that must be fed) and reveal the name's meaning slowly as the party learns what they are carrying.

Are these names from existing books or games?

A handful are classic evil swords from public-domain myth and well-known fiction (Tyrfing, Dáinsleif, Gurthang, Stormbringer, Mournblade) included as reference points. The vast majority are original and free to use in your campaign, novel or game.

How is an evil sword name different from a normal legendary sword name?

Heroic swords are named for light, kings and virtues (Excalibur, Durendal, Joyeuse), while evil blades are named for what they take: souls, oaths, heirs, hope. If a name would look wrong engraved on a paladin's blade, it probably belongs here.
