Evil Elf Name Generator

An evil elf name works by keeping the music of elvish and poisoning it. Good elves get open vowels and soft liquids (Galadriel, Legolas, Elrond); evil ones keep the same length and rhythm but trade the softness for hissing s and z clusters, hard k and kh, clipped endings and the occasional apostrophe that reads like a catch in the throat. Sszira Oussvek, Korvethal Kel'ashtar and Zsarkhen are all recognisably elvish, yet nobody would mistake them for friends.

The second tool is the surname or epithet, which is where you tell the reader what kind of villain this is. Drow-style matriarchal houses use elvish family names (Mel'keth, Hlaurvyn, Dhaerris). Fallen high elves keep aristocratic compound surnames, but the compounds curdle: Gallowsmere, Wyrmtongue, Blackcandle, Scarwhistle. Forest elves who have gone wrong take names from blight, fungus and poison plants (Hemlock, Brackenrot, Spore-Mother), while dark elf raiders in the Warhammer mould go for harsher, almost orcish consonants (Rakharth Dreadhelm, Zhulkhar Naggoroth). Epithets such as the Pale, Knife-in-Silk or Who Sings to Wasps work best for a single memorable antagonist.
