Generate evil castle names for dark lords, vampires, necromancers and tyrant kings: grim English compounds like Dreadholt and Gallowmere Keep, Gothic and Latin strongholds, Transylvanian and Germanic castles, harsh invented-language citadels, and epithet names like The Weeping Spire. Built for D&D, novels and worldbuilding.
About evil castle names
An evil castle name does three jobs at once: it tells the reader who rules there, it warns them what the place does to visitors, and it sounds wrong in the mouth in a way a heroic castle never does. Fiction's most famous examples are all very short on comfort. Barad-dûr simply means 'dark tower', Minas Morgul is the 'tower of sorcery', the Dreadfort is named for the fear it produces, and Castle Ravenloft is a pun on a crypt.
The most reliable technique is the dark compound: a word of rot, blood, bone, ash, gallows, thorn or night fused to a landscape or structure word such as moor, fen, crag, hold, spire or keep. Dreadholt, Gallowmere and Mourncrag all work because they are pronounceable in one breath. Epithet names take the opposite route and describe the castle's reputation outright: The Weeping Spire, The Iron Maw, Keep of the Sleepless Eye. A third style borrows real-world menace from Transylvanian, Slavic, Germanic or Latin forms, so Hrad Vlkodrak, Burg Totenstein and Castellum Noctis feel like places on an old map rather than inventions.
The list mixes all of these with harsh constructed-language names (Kar'Vesh, Zûl-Ghorath) for settings with their own tongues, and castles named for the villain who holds them.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide whether the castle is feared because of its lord, its history or its location, then name it for that one thing. A vampire's seat wants a family name (Castle Valkorin), a cursed ruin wants an event (Castle Nine Sorrows), a border fortress wants the land it watches (Bleakmoor Citadel).
- Keep invented-language names to two or three syllables with hard consonants (k, g, z, th, kh) and let the apostrophe do real work as a glottal stop; Kar'Vesh reads as a word, while a string of apostrophes reads as noise.
- Give the locals a nickname. The official name can be Castellum Noctis while every peasant calls it the Black Keep; using both in your story makes the place feel lived-in and old.
- Contrast the evil castle with the heroes' home. If the good kingdom uses soft English names like Whitehaven and Highcrest, the enemy's Krovgrad Fortress lands harder by comparison.
- Avoid stacking menace words. Dreadfort and Grimhollow work; Dread Blood Death Spire does not. One dark element plus one concrete noun is almost always the strongest recipe.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a castle name sound evil?
Hard consonants, dark imagery and a hint of what happens inside. Words like gallows, carrion, bone, thorn, blight, mourn and dread signal menace immediately, while harsh consonant clusters (kr, gh, zh, th) make the name feel foreign and hostile. Compare Whitehaven with Wrathmoor: same structure, opposite mood.
What are some famous evil castles in fiction?
Barad-dûr, Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur from Tolkien, the Dreadfort and Harrenhal from A Song of Ice and Fire, Castle Ravenloft from Dungeons & Dragons, Castle Dracula from Stoker and Castlevania, Castle Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village, Castle Volkihar from Skyrim and Snake Mountain from He-Man. Several appear in the list as reference points alongside the original names.
Can I use these names for a D&D campaign or a novel?
Yes. The original names are free to use in tabletop games, fiction, video games and worldbuilding. The handful of well-known canon castles are included for inspiration only and belong to their respective creators, so build your own villain's seat from the rest.
How do I name a castle after its villain?
Use the possessive or a title construction: Malgrath's Redoubt, Lady Vespira's Keep, Seat of the Lich Malgrath, Fortress of Vrokk the Devourer. This works best when the villain's name is already established, because the castle then inherits the fear the character has earned.
