English gothic surnames tend to draw from bleak landscape and trade words: fen, moor, ash, cray, mere, hollow, thorn, and grave-derived forms such as Gravesend and Mortlake are all real English place names, which is why they feel plausible. Latinate and biblical names (Cassius, Lazarus, Judith, Ezekiel) add weight and a sense of old judgement, and epithet forms like 'the Twice-Buried' or 'of the Salted Field' tell a whole backstory in four words.
