Generate fantasy sword names in every legendary tradition: Norse and Anglo-Saxon compounds like Gram and Hrunting, Arthurian and elvish names like Excalibur and Glamdring, Westerosi Valyrian steel like Oathkeeper and Longclaw, and Warcraft-style epics like Frostmourne. Ideal for D&D magic items, novels, and video games.

About fantasy sword names

Named swords predate fantasy fiction by well over a thousand years, and every real tradition has its own logic. Norse and Anglo-Saxon blades used kennings, compressed poetic compounds that describe what the sword does: Hrunting and Naegling in Beowulf, Gram ("wrath"), Skofnung, or the many "Leg-Biter" and "Byrnie-Bane" swords in the sagas. Medieval romance gave us grand single names, often with a Latin or Celtic root: Excalibur (from Caladbolg), Durendal, Joyeuse, Curtana. Tolkien built on both, giving his blades elvish names with meanings (Glamdring "foe-hammer", Orcrist "goblin-cleaver", Anduril "flame of the west") and letting the orcs call them Beater and Biter.

Modern fantasy has added two more styles. Westerosi Valyrian steel takes plain English words with emotional weight: Oathkeeper, Widow's Wail, Heartsbane, Longclaw, Dawn, Ice. Video game and D&D swords tend to be two-part compounds ending in -bringer, -breaker, -bane, -fang or -edge (Frostmourne, Ashbringer, Dawnbreaker), which is why so many player-named blades sound alike; used with restraint they still work.

The list moves through all of these registers, from single abstract nouns (Verdict, Requiem, Silence) that suit a duelist's rapier, through saga-style kennings, to formal 'The Sword of X' names for royal or holy weapons.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the sword's story: a sword forged for a purpose gets a purpose-name (Oathkeeper, Kingslayer), an heirloom gets a house or ancestor name (The Sword of Saint Ansel), and a saga blade gets a kenning (Shield-Breaker).
  • Single abstract nouns (Verdict, Mercy, Silence) are the most modern-feeling and suit sophisticated or morally grey wielders; save the -bringer and -bane compounds for genuinely epic weapons.
  • Give a great sword more than one name: the elves called it Anduril, the orcs called it Biter. Different names in different mouths make an artifact feel ancient.
  • For D&D and video games, avoid names that already belong to famous items (Frostmourne, Excalibur) unless the reference is the point; players will assume it's the real thing.
  • Say it in a sentence a character would actually use: 'She drew Requiem' works, 'She drew Shadowvoidbringer' does not.

Frequently asked questions

How are legendary swords usually named?

Real traditions used either poetic compounds describing what the blade does (Norse kennings like Leg-Biter, Tolkien's Foe-Hammer) or grand single names from Latin or Celtic roots (Excalibur, Durendal, Joyeuse). Modern fantasy adds emotionally weighted English words such as Oathkeeper, Heartsbane, and Widow's Wail, and RPG-style compounds ending in -bringer, -bane, or -breaker.

Can I use these sword names in my D&D campaign, novel, or game?

Yes. Names built from common words (Oathbreaker, Winter's Edge, The Sword of Sorrows) are free to use anywhere, including commercial fiction and games. Famous named swords from Tolkien, Game of Thrones, and Warcraft appear here to illustrate the conventions and should be treated as those franchises' property in anything you publish.

Should a sword name have one word or several?

Either works. One-word names (Gram, Ice, Verdict) sound older and more confident, and are easiest for characters to say. Multi-word names ('The Sword of the Morning', 'Widow's Wail') carry more story but need to earn their length; anything past four words tends to become a description rather than a name.

What are good names for a magic sword in D&D 5e?

Tie the name to the enchantment: a flame tongue could be Firebrand or Battle-Flame, a frost brand Rimefang or Coldbrand, a holy avenger The Sword of Saint Ansel or Absolution, a vorpal sword Verdict or Neck-Biter. Names that hint at the effect help players remember what the item does.
