The evil queen is one of the oldest villains in storytelling, and her name does half the work. Folklore gave her a title rather than a name (the Queen of Hearts, the Snow Queen, the Stepmother) so she could stand for every cold mother and jealous rival at once. An original evil queen name usually takes one of four shapes. A formal given name with a cruel epithet (Queen Theodora the Venomous, Queen Sigrid the Stone-Hearted) tells the reader what she has done. A name plus a dark house or seat (Isolde Vexmoor, Queen Ludmila of the Frozen Keep) roots her in a place. A title-only name (the Hollow Queen, the Widow Queen) suits a villain glimpsed from afar.
