Sword Name Generator

Named swords are older than fantasy fiction. Roland carried Durendal, Charlemagne carried Joyeuse, El Cid fought with Tizona and Colada, and Norse sagas name blades like Gram, Tyrfing, and Skofnung as if they were characters with grudges of their own. Real historical swords also earned names once they had a story attached: Curtana, the blunted Sword of Mercy, is still used in British coronations. That is the tradition this list draws on, alongside modern conventions from Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, and tabletop RPGs.

Good sword names tend to fall into a few structures. Single-word compounds (Dawnbringer, Widowmaker, Oathkeeper) read as blunt and iconic, which is why they dominate video game loot. Possessive titles (Reaper's Kiss, Tyrant's Bane) imply a deed or an owner. Definite-article names (The Answerer, The Quiet Blade) sound like reputations whispered by people who fear the sword. Finally, names in an invented tongue (Ithilrend, Kaelthorn) suggest elven or ancient forging and pair well with a translated epithet.

The strongest names hint at history rather than raw power. "Frostbite" says what the blade does; "Widow's Lament" says what it has done. When you pick a name, think about who forged it, who died holding it, and what its current owner is trying to prove.
