Tiefling Virtue Name Generator

Virtue names are one of the most distinctive ideas in Dungeons & Dragons tiefling lore. According to the 5e Player's Handbook, some younger tieflings, "striving to find a place in the world," adopt a name that signifies a virtue or other concept and then try to embody it. The book's own examples are deliberately mixed: Art, Carrion, Chant, Creed, Despair, Excellence, Fear, Glory, Hope, Ideal, Music, Nowhere, Open, Poetry, Quest, Random, Reverence, Sorrow, Temerity, Torment, and Weary. Only a few of those are virtues in the moral sense. The rest are aspirations, wounds, or shrugs.

That range is what makes a good virtue name. "Hope" or "Mercy" tells you a tiefling wants to be seen as good despite infernal blood. "Carrion" or "Torment" suggests one who has embraced how the world sees them, or who is daring it to look away. Abstract picks like "Nowhere," "Random," or "Elsewhere" belong to wanderers and orphans with no fixed idea of home. Verbs (Endure, Defy, Believe) read as personal mottos.

Historically, the practice echoes Puritan names such as Prudence, Temperance, and Increase, which is why virtue names feel plausible rather than gimmicky. Pick a word that could start a conversation in character: someone will ask why they're called that, and the answer is your backstory.
