About tiefling names

Tieflings in Dungeons & Dragons carry the blood of the Nine Hells, usually traced back to Asmodeus, and their names reflect a people caught between two worlds. The Player's Handbook describes three naming traditions. Some tieflings take Infernal names inherited from a fiendish ancestor: Akmenos, Kairon, Morthos, Bryseis, Damaia, Nemeia. Others are raised among humans and simply have the names of the culture they grew up in, whether that's a Sword Coast name like Rolan or something you'd hear in a Waterdeep tavern. A third group chooses a "virtue name," a common English word that declares who they intend to be: Hope, Reverence, Sorrow, Creed, Nowhere.

Infernal names lean on Greek and Hebrew-sounding syllables, with masculine names ending in -os, -on, -as, or -ech and feminine names ending in -a, -is, or -ia. Baldur's Gate 3 names like Karlach, Zevlor, and Alfira follow the same rhythm. Virtue names can be uplifting or bleak; a tiefling named Carrion or Torment has made a very different choice from one named Mercy.

When picking a name, ask what the character's relationship with their heritage is. A tiefling proud of infernal blood might carry an Infernal name openly; one hiding it might go by a human name and reveal the true one later. Pair any style with a human-style surname if your setting expects them.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose the naming tradition first: Infernal for a tiefling connected to their fiendish lineage, a virtue name for one defining themselves against it, a human name for one raised in ordinary society.
  • Virtue names don't have to be virtues; Nowhere, Random, Carrion, and Weary are all official examples and tell a darker story.
  • Infernal names sound right with Greek-style endings: -os and -on for masculine, -a and -is for feminine, plus hard k and z sounds.
  • For BG3-flavored characters, keep names short and punchy (Rolan, Cal, Lia, Mol) or two syllables with a hard consonant (Karlach, Zevlor).
  • A surname is optional; if you use one, human-style surnames (Ashcroft, Vantis) reflect a tiefling's upbringing rather than their bloodline.

Frequently asked questions

How do tiefling names work in D&D 5e?

The Player's Handbook gives tieflings three options: an Infernal name passed down from a fiendish ancestor (Akmenos, Bryseis), a name from the human culture that raised them, or a virtue name, an English word chosen to express the tiefling's identity (Hope, Sorrow, Creed).

What are some good female tiefling names?

Official Infernal examples include Akta, Anakis, Bryseis, Criella, Damaia, Ea, Kallista, Lerissa, Makaria, Nemeia, Orianna, Phelaia, and Rieta. Baldur's Gate 3 popularized Karlach, Alfira, Lakrissa, and Arabella, and virtue names like Mercy or Verity work well too.

Do tieflings have last names?

Not by default in the rules, but many players add one. Because tieflings are usually raised in human societies, surnames tend to be ordinary human family names or descriptive ones like Ashcroft or Blackthorne rather than anything Infernal.

Can I use these tiefling names in a published campaign or story?

The names invented here are free to use. Names taken directly from the D&D Player's Handbook or Baldur's Gate 3 are fine for personal games and homebrew, but avoid presenting canonical character names (like Karlach) as your own original characters in commercial work.
