About tiefling 5e names

The D&D 5e Player's Handbook lays out tiefling naming more explicitly than most races. Tieflings, it says, share the culture of the people who raised them, so many carry ordinary human names. Some, however, take names drawn from the Infernal language, and the book lists examples: Akmenos, Amnon, Barakas, Damakos, Ekemon, Iados, Kairon, Leucis, Melech, Mordai, Morthos, Pelaios, Skamos, and Therai for men; Akta, Anakis, Bryseis, Criella, Damaia, Ea, Kallista, Lerissa, Makaria, Nemeia, Orianna, Phelaia, and Rieta for women. Younger tieflings striving to find a place in the world often choose a virtue name instead: Art, Carrion, Chant, Creed, Despair, Excellence, Fear, Glory, Hope, Ideal, Music, Nowhere, Open, Poetry, Quest, Random, Reverence, Sorrow, Temerity, Torment, and Weary.

The invented Infernal names here copy the phonetics of those official examples: Greek-flavored endings (-os, -on, -is, -ia), hard k and th sounds, and two or three syllables. Baldur's Gate 3, which runs on 5e rules, added recognizable names like Karlach, Zevlor, Rolan, and Alfira that many players now treat as canon flavor.

On a 5e character sheet, name and background go together. A tiefling with the Acolyte background might carry a virtue name like Reverence; a Criminal might have dropped an Infernal name for a plain alias. Choose the name that says something about how your character handles being a tiefling.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use the Player's Handbook lists as a tuning fork: if an invented name would sound at home next to Akmenos or Damaia, it fits 5e.
  • Match name style to background: Acolyte and Folk Hero tieflings suit virtue names, Noble or Sage tieflings suit formal Infernal names, Urchins and Criminals suit short human nicknames.
  • Virtue names in 5e can be neutral or bleak (Nowhere, Random, Weary), not only positive; the point is that the tiefling chose it.
  • For NPCs, pair an Infernal first name with a local human surname (Kairon Vantis) so the character feels embedded in the town.
  • Keep player-character names to two or three syllables so the table can say them quickly in combat.

Frequently asked questions

What are the official 5e tiefling names in the Player's Handbook?

Male Infernal names: Akmenos, Amnon, Barakas, Damakos, Ekemon, Iados, Kairon, Leucis, Melech, Mordai, Morthos, Pelaios, Skamos, Therai. Female: Akta, Anakis, Bryseis, Criella, Damaia, Ea, Kallista, Lerissa, Makaria, Nemeia, Orianna, Phelaia, Rieta. Virtue names include Art, Carrion, Chant, Creed, Despair, Excellence, Fear, Glory, Hope, Ideal, Music, Nowhere, Open, Poetry, Quest, Random, Reverence, Sorrow, Temerity, Torment, and Weary.

Do 5e tieflings have surnames?

The rules don't require them. Since tieflings are usually raised in human societies, any surname is normally a human family name from their home region rather than something Infernal, which is why the full names on this list pair Infernal first names with human-style surnames.

Are Baldur's Gate 3 tiefling names valid for 5e?

Yes. Baldur's Gate 3 uses 5e rules and the Forgotten Realms setting, so names like Karlach, Zevlor, Rolan, Dammon, and Alfira are perfectly on-model for a 5e tiefling, though you may want to avoid reusing a named companion outright.

Can a tiefling have a normal human name in 5e?

Absolutely. The Player's Handbook says tieflings share the culture that raised them, so a tiefling from Waterdeep could simply be called Marius or Cordelia. Many players use a human name publicly and an Infernal or virtue name privately.
