Generate male tiefling names for D&D and other fantasy games: Infernal given names in the Player's Handbook manner like Akmenos, Andrakos and Melkai, clipped names like Dask and Vorn, blunt virtue names like Bastion and Writ, and full names such as Mordai Garrick and Amnon of Avernus.

About male tiefling names

The Player's Handbook gives tieflings three kinds of name: the names of the culture they were born into, Infernal names passed down through the family, and virtue names that a young tiefling chooses for himself. Its male Infernal examples set the sound: Akmenos, Barakas, Kairon, Melech, Mordai, Skamos. Male names close hard, on -os, -on, -as, -ech or -ai, while most of the female examples (Akta, Damaia, Kallista, Rieta) end in an open -a.

Most of the list is Infernal given names in two veins. One sounds almost Greek (Andrakos, Thaleus, Arkeon); the other is harsher and leans on z, kh and th (Azrech, Garzak, Drumoth). Clipped names such as Dask, Vorn and Rhaz work as street names or short forms. Virtue names have no gender in the rules, so this page gathers the blunt, martial and legal-sounding ones that players tend to give male characters: Bastion, Anvil, Writ, Grit, Vanguard.

The Player's Handbook lists no tiefling family names, so the full names here pair an Infernal or virtue name with a human-style surname from wherever he was raised (Mordai Garrick, Flint Oakhurst), a few of them soot-stained (Barakas Coalhand). Bynames such as Kazrath the Unbowed or Zamoth of Dis, which borrow the layers of the Nine Hells, suit a tiefling who knows which archdevil's line he comes from.

How to choose male tiefling names

  • Decide how he stands to his heritage before you pick. An Infernal name like Damakos says the family kept the old name, a virtue name like Pardon says he chose his own, and a human surname says where he grew up.
  • Say the name aloud as the DM would. Two or three syllables carry best, and one hard cluster (kh, zr, th) per name is plenty.
  • A virtue name lands hardest as a promise or a contradiction: a gentle cleric called Siege, a con man called Warrant, a deserter called Duty.
  • Pair a long Infernal name with a clipped one as the name friends use: Andrakos to the magistrate, Dask to the party.
  • A Nine Hells byname such as Hazrim of Cania or Amnon of Avernus ties him to one archdevil's bloodline, so ask your DM which lines exist in the setting first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the male tiefling names in the Player's Handbook?

The fifth edition Player's Handbook lists fourteen male Infernal names: Akmenos, Amnon, Barakas, Damakos, Ekemon, Iados, Kairon, Leucis, Melech, Mordai, Morthos, Pelaios, Skamos and Therai. All fourteen are in this list as anchors. The rest are original names written in the same style, not names taken from a book.

How do male tiefling names differ from female ones?

In the Player's Handbook examples the male names end on a consonant or on -ai (Skamos, Kairon, Melech, Mordai), while most of the female names end in -a (Damaia, Kallista, Rieta). New names on this page keep the male endings, as in Arkemos, Tharkon, Azrech and Melkai. Virtue names are shared by every gender.

Do male tieflings have last names?

The Player's Handbook gives tieflings no family names of their own, and a tiefling born into another culture usually carries that culture's names. That is why the full names here use human-style surnames, as in Kairon Pellam or Damakos Stroud, with a few soot-and-horn surnames such as Iados Brimward. A single Infernal or virtue name with no surname is just as correct.

Can I use these names in Baldur's Gate 3 or other games?

Yes. Baldur's Gate 3 runs on the fifth edition rules, so both Infernal names and virtue names fit a custom tiefling there. Nothing in the list depends on one setting, so the names also work for Pathfinder or a homebrew world.
