Fantasy Weapon Name Generator

Named weapons are one of the oldest ideas in storytelling. Beowulf swings Hrunting and Naegling, Roland dies clutching Durendal, Sigurd slays the dragon with Gram, and Arthur pulls Excalibur from the stone. Modern fantasy inherited that habit: Tolkien's Anduril and Sting, Martin's Longclaw and Widow's Wail, Warcraft's Frostmourne and Ashbringer, and D&D's Blackrazor and Icingdeath. A weapon with a name is a character in its own right, and readers and players treat it that way.

The naming patterns are surprisingly consistent. The most common is a single compound word built from an element or force plus an action or body part: Frostmourne, Stormbringer, Skullsplitter, Lifedrinker. The second is a possessive image, usually a creature or a person plus a sharp thing: Widow's Wail, Raven's Beak, Serpent's Fang. The third is a proper name in an old or invented language (Anglachel, Caladbolg, Tyrfing) that sounds like it belongs to a lost civilization. Finally there is the honorific title, "Sword of the Morning" or "Hammer of the Mountain King", which ties the weapon to a bloodline or order.
