Named weapons are one of the oldest storytelling devices there is. Arthur has Excalibur, Roland has Durandal, Sigurd has Gram, Thor has Mjolnir, and Beowulf borrows Hrunting. Almost every real named weapon falls into a few patterns. Many are compound words that describe what the weapon does or is made of: Andúril means "Flame of the West," Glamdring is "Foe-hammer," and Tyrfing is thought to mean "finger of Tyr." A fourth reaches for Latin or invented single words that sound like titles (Vindicta, Threnody, Requiem). And plain descriptive names like "Black-Iron Bastard Sword" belong in your loot table too, because legendary items only feel legendary next to ordinary steel.
