About weapon names

Named weapons are one of the oldest storytelling devices there is. Arthur has Excalibur, Roland has Durandal, Sigurd has Gram, Thor has Mjolnir, and Beowulf borrows Hrunting. Almost every real named weapon falls into a few patterns. Many are compound words that describe what the weapon does or is made of: Andúril means "Flame of the West," Glamdring is "Foe-hammer," and Tyrfing is thought to mean "finger of Tyr." Modern fantasy inherited that habit, giving us Stormbringer, Frostmourne, Ashbringer, Lightbringer, and every "-bane" and "-slayer" you can imagine.

A second pattern names the weapon for its owner, its origin, or a promise: Oathkeeper, Widow's Wail, Longclaw, Needle. A third uses a phrase with an article, often understated or ironic, which is where video games and grimdark fiction shine: "The Last Argument," "The Kindly Cut," "The Ferryman's Fee." A fourth reaches for Latin or invented single words that sound like titles (Vindicta, Threnody, Requiem). And plain descriptive names like "Black-Iron Bastard Sword" belong in your loot table too, because legendary items only feel legendary next to ordinary steel.

The list above pulls from real myth and legend, classic fantasy conventions, and modern game-style naming, so you can pick a name that matches the tone of your world, from high epic to bleak and blood-soaked.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the weapon's history, not just its power: a sword called "The Broken Promise" implies a betrayal your story can explore.
  • Compound names ("Wyrmsbane," "Foehammer") read as old and mythic; article phrases ("The Quiet Word") read as modern, ironic, or grimdark. Pick the register your setting uses.
  • Avoid stacking too many dark words. "Doom Death Shadowblade" reads as parody; "Nightthorn" does the same job in one word.
  • For loot tables, mix tiers: plain descriptors for common gear, one-word titles for rares, and full legendary names with backstory for uniques.
  • Say the name aloud. A weapon name a character will shout mid-battle should be two or three syllables at most.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous named weapons from myth and legend?

Excalibur (King Arthur), Durandal (Roland), Gram (Sigurd), Mjolnir (Thor), Gungnir (Odin), Kusanagi (Japanese imperial regalia), Zulfiqar (Ali), Caladbolg and Gáe Bulg (Irish myth), and Hrunting from Beowulf are among the best known.

How do fantasy authors invent weapon names?

Most either compound two evocative words (Storm + bringer, Frost + mourne), name the weapon after a promise or owner (Oathkeeper, Longclaw), or use a phrase with an article for an ironic or ominous effect (The Widow's Kiss). Tolkien built his from invented languages, which is why Andúril and Glamdring feel like real words.

Can I use these weapon names in my D&D campaign or game?

Yes. Names from myth are public domain, and the original names here are free for personal and commercial use. Names from copyrighted franchises like Frostmourne or Longclaw are listed for reference and are fine at your table but should not appear in a published product.

Should every weapon in my story have a name?

No. Named weapons carry weight precisely because they are rare. Reserve names for heirlooms, artifacts, and weapons that mark a character's identity, and let ordinary arms stay nameless.
