Generate knight names in the true medieval style: Sir or Dame, a period given name, then a place-name, an epithet earned in battle or a heraldic byname, from Sir Aldric of Thornwood to Dame Rowena the Unyielding.

About knight names

Real medieval knights were named in a fairly predictable way, and copying that structure is what makes a fantasy knight sound right. First came the honorific: Sir for men, and Dame (or Lady) for the rare women who held knighthood or its equivalent. Then a Christian given name drawn from a small pool: Geoffrey, Hugh, Ranulf, Baldwin, William, Roger, Eleanor, Maud, Alys, Joan. Then a byname that told you where they came from or what they had done. Sir Hugh of Ashby, Sir Robert de Lacy, Sir Ranulf FitzWalter (son of Walter), Sir William the Marshal, Bertrand du Guesclin. Epithets like Ironside, Longshanks, the Bold, the Pious and the Grim were earned in the field or handed out by chroniclers.

Arthurian romance added a second flavor: knights known by a heraldic device or an adventure rather than a place. The Green Knight, the Knight of the Cart, Sir Ywain of the Lion, Sir Bedivere One-Hand, Sir Kay the Seneschal. Those "Knight of the X" styles are perfect for a mysterious tourney champion whose real name is a secret.

The list below mixes historically flavored names (Norman, Anglo-Saxon, Welsh, German, Spanish and French roots), Round Table style epithets, and a full set of Dame names so female knights aren't an afterthought. Choose the given name for the culture, then the byname for the character's story.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a real medieval given name first (Hugh, Ranulf, Maud, Alys), then add either a place-name or an epithet, not both, unless the knight is very grand.
  • Use 'of' for a knight tied to a place, 'de' or 'von' for a Norman or German noble house, and 'Fitz' or 'ap' for son-of names; each hints at a different origin.
  • Epithets should be earned. Decide what Sir Odo did to become Brokenlance and you have a backstory in one word.
  • For a mysterious challenger, use a heraldic style with no given name (the Falcon Knight, the Knight of the Two Swords) and reveal the real name later.
  • Dame is the historically grounded feminine title. Use it for women knights rather than 'Lady' unless you specifically want to signal nobility instead of knighthood.

Frequently asked questions

How were medieval knights actually named?

Usually Sir plus a given name plus a byname: a place they held (Sir Hugh of Ashby), a family name introduced with de or Fitz (Sir Robert de Lacy, Sir Ranulf FitzWalter), or an earned nickname (William Longsword, Edmund Ironside). Surnames as we know them were only just forming.

What is the female equivalent of Sir for a knight?

Dame. It's the title used today for women knighted in the UK and the natural choice for a fantasy female knight, though many settings also use Lady or simply Sir for everyone.

What are the most famous knight names?

From Arthurian legend: Lancelot, Gawain, Percival, Galahad, Bedivere, Kay, Tristan and Ywain. From history: William Marshal, Bertrand du Guesclin, El Cid (Rodrigo de Vivar) and Edward the Black Prince. Many of these appear here in period-correct forms.

Can I use these knight names for a D&D paladin or fighter?

Yes. Take the given name and epithet and drop the Sir until your character is actually knighted in-game; earning the title makes for a great campaign moment.
