Elven Sword Name Generator
Starlit, leaf-thin names for elf-forged blades
Generate names for elf-forged swords, from light and leaf compounds like Gleamwake and Leaf-on-the-Wind to poetic titles such as The Last Light of Summer and Song of the White Tree. The 1,000 names also cover elvish-style coinages, house heirlooms, twin blades and a few fallen dark elf swords.
About elven sword names
Elven swords in fantasy are rarely named for what they kill. Where a Norse blade is a leg-biter, an elf-forged sword is more often named for what its makers love or have lost: starlight, a season, a tree, a song, a shore left behind. The name reads like the first line of a poem, and the threat is in the understatement.
This list holds 1,000 names in that register. One-word compounds of light and dusk (Gleamwake, Gloamthread) sit beside leaf and season names (Leaf-on-the-Wind, The Last Light of Summer), poetic titles and hyphenated kennings (The Patience of Ages, Sings-in-the-Sheath), and songs and laments for blades of mourning. There are heirlooms tied to a noble house, forge and maker's names, wood elf long knives, sea, snow and moon elf blades, twin swords named as a pair such as Question and Answer, and a small share of dark elf and fallen blades.
The coined names, such as Silmathrin or Nimrasil, are written in an elvish style. Some borrow a familiar root, but none is offered as correct Sindarin or Quenya and none carries a translation, so you decide what they mean in your world. Only four names show a gloss in brackets, and each of those joins two well-known roots, as in Ithilmegil (moon-sword).
How to choose elven sword names
- Name the blade for what the smith loved, not for what it cuts. The Lighthouse Vow or The Unfallen Leaf says elf at once, while anything with skull, gore or doom in it reads as the work of another people.
- Match the form to the owner. A wood elf scout suits a short plain name like Fox-Quick, a high elf heirloom can carry a full title such as Heirloom of House Aelvaren, and twin blades want a pair like Ebb and Flood.
- Give a coined name an everyday name as well. A sword can be Nimrasil in its makers' tongue and Winter Heron to everyone else, which gives players and readers something they can say.
- Say it aloud before you commit. A name the whole table can pronounce after one hearing gets used; a long coinage nobody can spell becomes "the elf sword" by the second session.
- Let a mourning name carry history. Tear of the Last Queen or What the Sea Took implies a lost realm, so decide what was lost before the blade turns up in play.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a sword name sound elven?
Soft sounds, natural images and restraint. Elven blades in fantasy are named for light, stars, leaves, water, music and memory, and they tend to understate what the sword does. Names such as Gleamwake, The Lighthouse Vow and The Reed That Does Not Break follow that habit.
Are the elvish-looking names real Sindarin or Quenya?
No. Coinages such as Silmathrin and Elentirith are written in an elvish style. Some borrow roots that fantasy readers will recognize, but none is offered as a correct word of Sindarin, Quenya or any other published language, and an English byname after a coined name, as in Maruvel, Slow to Anger, is an epithet, not a translation. The four names with a gloss in brackets, like Gilmegil (star-sword), are the exception: each joins two well-known Sindarin roots. This page has no affiliation with any book, film or game.
Can I use these names in a D&D campaign or a novel?
Yes. The names are drafted in the style of the genre for your own characters' weapons, magic items and stories, and none is meant as a blade from a particular book or game. If you plan to publish, search for the name yourself first.
How do I name a pair of elven swords?
Twin blades usually share one idea split in two: opposites, a call and its reply, or two things found together. The list includes pairs such as Question and Answer, Ebb and Flood and Lark and Nightingale. In play, call each sword by its own half of the name.
