Generate names for a matched pair of blades, from opposites like Mercy and Wrath and Flame & Frost to collective names like The Twin Fangs and The Widow's Scissors. Every entry names both swords or the whole set, for dual-wielding rogues, rangers and duelists.

About dual sword names

A pair of swords is named differently from a single blade. One sword can carry a legend alone, but two carried together are read against each other, so the name has to say how they relate: rivals, partners, siblings, or two halves of one idea. Chinese legend tells of the paired swords Gan Jiang and Mo Ye, named for the smith and his wife. Samurai wore the daisho, a long katana with a shorter wakizashi, and Renaissance duelists fought with a rapier in one hand and a parrying dagger in the other.

Every entry here names both weapons or the whole set. Most are two names joined by "and" or "&", such as Mercy and Wrath or Tide & Undertow. Others give the set one collective name, like The Twin Verdicts or The Widow's Scissors. The 1,000 entries run through opposites, natural complements, sun and moon pairs, virtue and vice, beasts, weather, landscape, family ties, assassin's tools, duelist's wit, long-and-short sets, jokes, and pairs in an invented tongue.

When you choose, decide which hand holds which blade and let the name carry that. One simple rule: main-hand sword first, off-hand blade second. A good pair also leaves room for a story about why the two were forged, found or stolen together.

How to choose dual sword names

  • Assign each half to a hand. In Riposte and Regret, the first is the blade that answers an attack and the second is the one that ends the fight.
  • Match the relationship to the wielder: a paladin's pair suits virtue and vice names such as Patience and Spite, while a rogue's daggers suit grim or joking pairs like Alibi & Epitaph or Plan A & Plan B.
  • For a long sword carried with a short one, pick a name that shows the difference in size, such as Sermon and Amen or The Oak and the Acorn.
  • Use a collective name when the blades are never seen apart, then give each one a private nickname that only the wielder uses.
  • Say both halves aloud. Pairs with a matching rhythm or a shared first sound, like Feint & Finish, are easier for a table to remember.

Frequently asked questions

How do you name a pair of swords?

Start with how the two blades relate. Opposites (Flame & Frost), complements (Hammer & Anvil) and kin (Heir and Spare) are the most common patterns. Then decide whether each blade gets its own name or the set shares one, like The Twin Fangs.

Should dual swords have two names or one?

Both work. Two names let each blade have its own character and powers, which suits a game where the weapons have different stats. A single collective name such as The Tailor's Shears or The Wedded Blades suits a matched set that is always drawn together.

Are these names taken from games, anime or novels?

No. The list is written in a general fantasy style for your own characters rather than copied from one setting. Famous fictional pairs, such as Icingdeath and Twinkle, the scimitars of Drizzt Do'Urden in R. A. Salvatore's novels, belong to their own works, so we did not set out to include them. A short phrase can still turn up elsewhere, so search a name yourself before you publish.

What names work for a long sword and a short sword carried together?

Look for pairs where the first half is plainly bigger than the second: The Long Word and the Short Answer, Mountain & Molehill, Hour Hand & Minute Hand. The Japanese term for such a set is daisho, the katana worn with the shorter wakizashi.
