About storm names

Real storms are named three different ways, and each produces a different sound. Meteorological services in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands run an alphabetical list of ordinary given names each season, so Storm Arwen, Storm Babet and Storm Ciarán follow one another and skip Q, U, X, Y and Z. The Weather Channel names US winter storms from a list heavy on classical and mythic names such as Athena, Brutus and Draco. Before formal lists existed, storms were remembered by the date or the damage: the Candlemas Storm, the Great Gale of 1871, the Children's Blizzard.

That last convention is the one to copy for fiction. A storm that matters to a plot needs a name people would actually use in dialogue: a saint's day or holiday, a place it wrecked, a nickname like the Widowmaker or the Big Blow, or a title in the world's own religion such as the Stormfather's Wrath. Local wind names (the Mistral, the Bora, the Haboob, the Blue Norther) are another rich vein; pair one with a verb of violence and it instantly sounds like something sailors fear.

This list mixes all of those registers with storm types as prefixes (Typhoon, Derecho, Bomb Cyclone, Supercell), so you can match the scale of the weather to the scale of the story.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the prefix to the basin: hurricanes form in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, typhoons in the western Pacific, cyclones in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific. Getting this right makes a fictional storm feel researched.
  • For historical fiction, name the storm after a feast day or a place (the Michaelmas Gale, the Drowning of Saltmarsh) rather than a person; official given-name lists only began in the 1950s.
  • If your world has its own gods or calendar, build the storm's name from them (the Stormfather's Wrath, the Eve of May Storm) so it reinforces the setting instead of importing ours.
  • Avoid names retired after deadly real storms such as Katrina, Haiyan or Sandy; they carry real grief and will pull readers out of the story.
  • Give a recurring fictional storm a short nickname people would shout (Old Howler, Cold Betty) and a longer formal name for newspapers and records within the story.

Frequently asked questions

How do storms get their official names?

Tropical cyclones use rotating lists maintained by the World Meteorological Organization. European windstorms are named from annual alphabetical lists set by the UK Met Office, Met Éireann and KNMI, and the Weather Channel assigns names to significant US winter storms. Names of especially destructive storms are retired.

What makes a good fantasy storm name?

Ground it in the world: a god's name, a feast day, a ruined place, or a sailor's nickname. Names like the Eye of the Drowned God or the Hollowbrook Flood tell the reader what the storm did and who fears it, which a random invented word cannot.

Can I use these as winter storm or blizzard names?

Yes. The Winter Storm and Blizzard entries follow the classical and Nordic feel of real winter storm lists, while the historic-style names (the Long Night Blizzard, the Nine Nights' Snow) suit stories set before formal naming existed.

Are these names safe to use in a novel or game?

Individual given names and invented titles are free to use. The list deliberately avoids retired names of catastrophic real storms, but if you pick a given name, a quick search will tell you whether a notorious real storm already carried it.
