Hurricane Name Generator

Hurricane names aren't invented storm by storm. The World Meteorological Organization keeps six alphabetical lists for the Atlantic that rotate every six years, so the 2026 list (Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly...) is the same one used in 2020 and will return in 2032. Each list has 21 names because Q, U, X, Y, and Z are skipped, names alternate between male and female, and they are drawn from English, Spanish, and French to reflect the countries the storms hit. The Eastern Pacific has its own lists (24 names, including X, Y, and Z), and other basins use everything from Hawaiian names to Filipino ones.

When a hurricane is deadly or costly enough that reusing its name would be insensitive, it is retired and replaced: Katrina, Andrew, Sandy, Harvey, Irma, Maria, Ian, and Milton are gone for good, and their replacements (Katia for Katrina, Alex for Andrew, Sara for Sandy) show up in later lists. Since 2021, if a season exhausts all 21 names, forecasters use a supplemental list (Adria, Braylen, Caridad...) instead of Greek letters.

Use the names above when you need a storm that sounds official for a novel, a disaster film, a news-style game event, or trivia; the ones from current lists will genuinely be assigned to real storms in the coming years.
