About ocean names

Real oceans and seas are named in a handful of predictable ways, and good fictional ones borrow the same logic. Some take a direction or position (the Southern Ocean, the North Sea, the Mediterranean, literally "middle of the land"). Some are named for a colour or quality of the water (the Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Yellow Sea). Others honour a person or people (the Tasman Sea, the Bering Sea, the Caribbean after the Carib people), and a surprising number are just poetic descriptions, like Homer's "wine-dark sea" or the Pacific, which Magellan named for its calm.

Fantasy maps tend to lean on two structures. The first is "The [Adjective] [Deep/Main/Sea/Expanse]", which sounds like something sailors would say in a tavern: the Sundering Deep, the Trackless Main. The second is "Sea of [Proper Noun]", which sounds like a cartographer's label and lets you attach an invented name to a coastline, kingdom, or legend. Mixing both styles on one map makes the world feel older, as if different cultures named different waters.

When picking a name, think about who is doing the naming. Fishermen name a sea for its dangers, traders for what crosses it, priests for the god who rules it. That perspective is what turns a pretty phrase into a piece of setting.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to how the water behaves in your story: a calm trade route wants a name like the Halcyon Sea, while a shipwreck coast earns the Widowmaker Sea.
  • Use "Sea of [Name]" for waters named after a nearby kingdom, city, or founder, and "The [Adjective] Deep" for names sailors would use in speech.
  • Give the same ocean two names if two cultures share it; the contrast between the Merchant's Sea and the Sea of Chains says a lot about who profits from it.
  • Keep short names for the big oceans and longer descriptive names for gulfs, straits, and bays so the map reads at a glance.
  • Avoid stacking more than one dramatic adjective; "the Sunless Deep" lands harder than "the Dark Sunless Shadowy Deep".
