About storm giant names

Storm giants sit at the top of the ordning, the divine ranking of giantkind in Dungeons & Dragons, and their names carry that weight. Where frost and fire giants borrow from Old Norse, the storm giants of Storm King's Thunder sound Greek: King Hekaton (the Greek word for a hundred), his queen Neri, and their children Serissa, Mirran, Nym and Uthor. Their god Stronmaus is a sky-father in the Zeus mold, and their undersea court of Maelstrom feels closer to Poseidon's palace than to Jotunheim. The names here lean into that register, with -on, -os, -eus and -issa endings and roots drawn from the Greek words for lightning (astrapi), thunder (bronti), storm (thyella), sea (thalassa) and wind.

Because storm giants live for centuries and rule from cloud-capped peaks and trenches alike, many are known by an epithet rather than a family name: Thalmaron Tidecaller, Ouressa of the Nine Winds, Keraunos Boltwielder. A handful here also borrow Old Norse forms for tables that keep all giants in one Jotun tongue, and Greek Titans and Nereids appear for DMs who want a mythic flavor. House and court names round out the list for storm giant dynasties, and any epithet on the longer entries can be lifted and attached to a different given name.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For 5e canon feel, pair a two- or three-syllable Greek-sounding given name (Keraunos, Thyellos, Nerissa) with no surname; storm giants in published adventures go by one name.
  • Add an epithet only for rulers, prophets and champions. Tidecaller or of the Nine Winds tells the party this giant matters; a storm giant farmer is just Pelagios.
  • Match the epithet to the giant's home: sea epithets (Reefwarden, Wavebreaker) for undersea courts, sky epithets (Skyrender, Cloudmother) for mountain citadels.
  • If your setting treats all giants as Norse-derived, use the Old Norse options (Thorbrand, Ragnhild, Styrbjorn) with a storm byname so the storm giants still stand apart from frost giants.
  • Storm giants are often oracles and lawgivers, so quiet names like Galenos the Calm or Erathea the Knowing can be more memorable than another thunder reference.

Frequently asked questions

What are the storm giants named in Storm King's Thunder?

King Hekaton rules from Maelstrom with his daughters Serissa, Mirran and Nym; his late queen was Neri and his son is Uthor. The storm giant god is Stronmaus, son of the giant All-Father Annam.

Why do storm giant names sound Greek rather than Norse?

Fifth edition gave storm giants a Mediterranean, Olympian flavor to distinguish them from the Norse-styled frost giants: Hekaton is Greek for a hundred, and their sky-and-sea domains echo Zeus and Poseidon. The generator follows that convention but also offers Norse forms.

Do storm giants have surnames or family names?

Not usually. They are known by a single name, sometimes with a title or epithet, and by lineage (Line of Hekaton). For dynasties you can use the house and court names here, such as House Maelkoron or Court of the Nine Winds.

Can I use these names for cloud giants or titans?

Yes. Cloud giants share the sky-lord register, and the Greek Titan and Nereid names (Hyperion, Amphitrite, Briareos) work for any mythic giant. Just keep the harsher Norse names for frost and fire giants.
