Generate season names for fantasy calendars and worldbuilding, drawn from real seasonal traditions: Chinese solar terms, Japanese sekki, the Wheel of the Year, Hindu ritu, Noongar seasons, and full-moon names.
About season names
Real cultures have never agreed that a year has four seasons. The Hindu calendar counts six ritu (Vasanta, Grishma, Varsha, Sharad, Hemanta, Shishira), the Noongar people of southwest Australia track six seasons defined by wind and rain rather than dates, and the Chinese agricultural calendar splits the year into 24 solar terms with names like Awakening of Insects, Grain in Ear, and Frost's Descent. Those names all do the same job: they tell a farmer, sailor, or hunter what to expect from the land right now.
That is the secret to inventing convincing seasons for a fantasy calendar. Name them for what people actually experience during that stretch: the mud, the lambing, the first frost, the salt haze off the sea. Short compound words (Leaffall, Frostbreak, Highsun) feel old and worn-in, while phrases with an article (The Thawing, The Long Dark, The Lean Months) sound like something villagers say aloud. Mixing both gives a calendar texture, and naming five or six seasons instead of four instantly signals a world with its own climate.
This list combines invented season names built on those patterns with real ones from Old English, Latin, the pagan Wheel of the Year, church calendars, and the traditional full-moon names, so you can borrow authentic terms or use them as templates for your own.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide what your world's seasons are for before naming them: an agrarian society names seasons after crops and weather, a seafaring one after winds and tides, a desert one after water.
- Vary the grammar across a calendar. Pair one-word compounds (Reaptide) with article phrases (The Scorch) so the set does not read as a template.
- Borrow real structures like the solar terms (Minor Cold, Major Cold) when you need many subdivisions; the paired minor/major pattern makes long calendars easy for readers to follow.
- Check that season names do not clash with place or character names in your setting; Yule and Samhain carry strong real-world associations that may or may not fit.
Frequently asked questions
How many seasons should a fantasy calendar have?
Anything from two (wet and dry) to twenty-four (like the Chinese solar terms) is realistic. Six is a good sweet spot for fiction: it feels distinct from our calendar without overwhelming readers with names.
Are these real season names or made up?
Both. Names like Beltane, Harmattan, Djeran, and Grain Rain are real terms from various cultures and calendars; names like Frostfall, The Greening, and Highsun are invented in the same style for worldbuilding.
Can I use season names as character names?
Yes. Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter are all established given names, and softer terms like Sakura, Vasanta, and Ostara work well as fantasy first names too.
Where do the full-moon names come from?
Names like Wolf Moon, Harvest Moon, and Beaver Moon are the traditional North American names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, drawing on Algonquin and colonial folk usage for each month's full moon.
