About mountain names
Real mountains are named in three main ways. Many are plain description in the local language: Mont Blanc (white mountain), Ben Nevis (possibly cloud mountain), Kilimanjaro (probably shining mountain), Denali (the high one) and Aoraki (cloud piercer). Others are named for shape or resemblance: Matterhorn (meadow horn), Half Dome, Broken Top, Table Mountain, the Maroon Bells. A third group carries the names of people or gods: Everest after a surveyor, Mount Rainier after an admiral, Kailash and Olympus for the deities believed to live on them.
The word for mountain varies with the language and tells you where you are. Ben and Beinn are Scottish Gaelic, Sgùrr and Stob mark rocky Highland peaks, Cerro and Nevado are Spanish, Piz is Romansh, Horn and Spitze are German, Tind and Fjell are Norwegian, Shan is Chinese, -take and -yama are Japanese. Using the right one instantly places a fictional peak in a culture.
For invented mountains, single evocative peaks (Grimspire, The Widow's Tooth, Old Greybeard) work best when they sound like something locals would say rather than a title from a map. Mix formal names (Mount Vigil) with nicknames (The Sleeping Giant) the way real ranges do, and let the tallest or holiest peak carry the grandest name.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide who named the mountain: locals name for what it looks like, explorers name for patrons, and priests name for gods, and each style gives a different feel.
- Use a language-specific mountain word (Ben, Cerro, Piz, Horn, Tind, Shan) to anchor an invented peak in a specific culture on your map.
- Give a mountain a formal name and a local nickname; Mount Vigil on the charts might be the Old Man to shepherds.
- Reserve dramatic names like Widowmaker or Blackfang for peaks that are actually dangerous or plot-relevant, and keep the rest quiet and descriptive.
- For a mountain range, name the highest peak first and let neighbouring summits echo it (Storhorn, Kleinhorn, Grauhorn).

How do mountains get their names?
Most are named by the people who lived near them for what the mountain looks like or does: its colour, its shape, the weather it makes, or the god who lives on it. Colonial-era surveyors later added names of patrons and officers, which is why Everest and Rainier are named for men who never climbed them.
What are good fantasy mountain names?
Ones that sound like a description worn into a name: Grimspire, Cloudrest, the Widow's Tooth, Coldspire, Old Greybeard. Add a culture-specific mountain word (Beinn, Cerro, Horn, Fjell) if your world has distinct peoples, and avoid stacking too many dramatic adjectives.
Should I write Mount before the name?
