About apocalypse names
Post-apocalyptic names are earned, not given. When the old world falls, birth names get replaced by what a person does, what they lost or what they look like: Doc, Sawbones, Half-Face, Three-Finger Jack, The Man Who Sold Water. Fiction from Mad Max to Fallout, The Road, Station Eleven and Metro 2033 leans on this because a nickname tells the reader a survivor's whole history in two words. The most common patterns are scrap and machinery (Ratchet, Rebar, Diesel, Nitro), scavenger animals (Coyote, Vulture, Roach), radiation and disaster vocabulary (Fallout, Geiger, Halflife, Zero Hour) and old-job titles that outlived their institutions (Preacher, Warden, Sheriff, Marshal).
Warlords and cult leaders take grander names, often with a definite article and a territory: The Salt Queen, The Butcher of Barstow, The Prophet of Ash. Ordinary survivors, on the other hand, are often just plain people with plain names, which is why Ruth Kessler or Ezra Holt hits harder in a bleak story than another Shadow Reaper would. Gangs and settlements borrow from the roads and infrastructure they hold (The Vultures of I-40, Silo Seven, Bunker Nine, Bartertown).
Mix the three layers, birth name, wasteland nickname and faction, and the world starts to feel lived in.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give important characters both a pre-collapse name and the wasteland name they go by; the moment someone uses the old name becomes a scene.
- Nicknames should point to a scar, a job or an event (Sawbones, Burnt Tommy, Ten Penny), not just sound tough.
- Name settlements after what is physically there: a silo, a highway junction, a dry creek, a fort built from a shopping mall.
- Warlords get the definite article and a domain (The Bone Baron, The Widow of Route 9); rank-and-file raiders get one blunt word.
- For a zombie or plague setting, lean on medical and quarantine words (Stitches, Doc, Iodine); for nuclear settings, radiation words (Rad, Geiger, Cesium).
Frequently asked questions
What are good post-apocalyptic names?
The best ones are short nicknames tied to survival: Ratchet, Sawbones, Coyote, Half-Face, Geiger. For leaders use a title and territory, like The Salt Queen or The Butcher of Barstow.
How do people get their names in a post-apocalyptic world?
In most fiction they are given by other survivors, based on a trade (Doc, Tinker), a feature (Redeye, Scar), a habit (Whistling Pete) or something they survived (Fallout, Nine Lives). Birth names tend to survive only among family or in isolated communities.
Can I use these names for Fallout, Wasteland or a Mad Max style RPG?
Yes. They fit Fallout characters and raider gangs, Wasteland 3 squads, Twilight 2000 or Apocalypse World campaigns, and any tabletop or video game with a ruined-world setting.
Are these names free to use commercially?
The names are original or generic and can be used in your novels, games and other projects. A few (The Citadel, Bartertown, Sanctuary Hills) reference well-known franchise locations, so avoid those in commercial work.
