About fantasy ocean names
Look at any real map and you'll notice oceans are named in only a handful of ways. Some carry a colour or quality (the Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Dead Sea), some are named for a people or a place on their shore (the Irish Sea, the Gulf of Mexico), some describe a shape or position (the Narrows, the Southern Ocean), and a few carry a story (the Sea of Marmara, named for its marble islands). Fantasy cartographers borrow every one of these tricks: Tolkien's Belegaer means simply "great sea", Martin's Narrow Sea and Sunset Sea are positional, and Forgotten Realms' Sea of Fallen Stars carries a creation myth in three words.
The structure you choose changes how the name reads. "The Sea of X" is formal and slightly mythic and suits waters with legends attached (the Sea of Lost Ships, the Sea of the Drowned God). Adjective plus noun (the Shivering Sea, the Cinder Sea) reads like something sailors coined, and one-word coinages like Ekkaia or the Sundrown feel ancient and elvish. Smaller bodies of water want their own vocabulary: gulfs, bights, sounds, firths, straits and reaches all sit differently on a map and tell readers how the coast is shaped.
This list mixes all of those forms, plus a handful of Latin-style names for setting scholars who write in an old tongue, so you can name a whole world's worth of water without every sea sounding the same.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name oceans from the point of view of the culture drawing the map: the same water can be the Sunset Sea to easterners and the Dawn Sea to the people on the far shore.
- Use the smaller-water words (gulf, bight, strait, sound, firth, reach) for coastal features; saving 'ocean' for the two or three biggest bodies makes the map feel properly scaled.
- Attach one legend per named sea. 'The Sea of Broken Oars' or 'The Bay of Bells' begs a story, and that story becomes a plot hook for a campaign or a chapter for a novel.
- Vary the grammar. If half your seas are 'The Sea of X', switch some to adjective forms (the Bitter Sea) or single-word names (the Vasthold) so the map doesn't read like a list.
- Check pronunciation aloud for anything invented (Nharra, Ossos, Yth); if players or readers stumble, simplify it.
Frequently asked questions
How are fantasy oceans usually named?
Most follow real-world patterns: a colour or quality (the Grey Ocean), a position relative to the mapmaker (the Narrow Sea, the Western Ocean), a legend (the Sea of Fallen Stars), or a coined word from an in-world language such as Tolkien's Belegaer. Mixing several patterns across one map is what makes it feel authentic.
What's the difference between a sea, an ocean, a gulf, and a strait?
An ocean is a vast open expanse; a sea is a smaller, often partly enclosed body of salt water; a gulf or bay is a large inlet of a sea; a strait or channel is a narrow passage connecting two larger waters. Using the right term is a cheap way to make your geography feel real.
Are these ocean names free to use in my book or D&D campaign?
Yes. Names built from common words like 'the Shivering Sea' or 'the Gulf of Embers' can be used freely in fiction, tabletop games, and video games, commercially or otherwise. A few entries echo famous fantasy settings for inspiration; for published work, prefer names that aren't strongly associated with an existing franchise.
Should a fantasy ocean name include 'The'?
Usually yes in prose ('they crossed the Sunset Sea'), but on the map itself the article is normally dropped and only the name is lettered across the water. Single-word coinages like Ekkaia or Thalassa work without an article at all.
