Volcano Name Generator

Real volcanoes are named the way any mountain is, but with a few extra flavors that are worth stealing. Many carry the local word for fire or smoke: Popocatépetl is Nahuatl for smoking mountain, Eyjafjallajökull is Icelandic for island-mountains glacier, Nyiragongo and Erta Ale come from Swahili and Afar names for smoking or fuming mountains, and Whakaari means to make visible in Māori. Others take saints or Catholic terms in Spanish-speaking regions (Santa María, Fuego, Misti, La Soufrière meaning sulphur mine), personal names of explorers or ships in the polar south (Mount Erebus and Mount Terror were named for two ships), or plain description in English (Cinder Cone, Crater Lake, Old Smoky). Volcanoes on other worlds get Latin labels: Olympus Mons on Mars, Maat Mons on Venus, Loki Patera and Pele on Io.

Fantasy volcanoes tend to follow one of two paths. Tolkien's Mount Doom (Orodruin, fiery mountain in Sindarin) set the template for the ominous descriptive name, and games followed with Firemaw, Cinderspire, and Brimstone Peak. The other path is mythic association: Surtr and Muspelheim from Norse myth, Hephaestus and Vulcan from Greek and Roman, Pele from Hawaiian, or a dragon's throat or giant's forge. Names that describe what the volcano does (Grumbler's Peak, the Weeping Mountain, the Sleeping Giant) often work better than another Fire-something because they imply the locals live with it.
