Create Saiyan names for Dragon Ball OCs using Toriyama's actual rule: mangle a vegetable, herb, or legume until it sounds like a warrior (Kakarot from carrot, Nappa from greens, Broly from broccoli). Canon names included for reference, plus 500 originals.

About saiyan names

Saiyan names are vegetable puns, full stop. Akira Toriyama built the whole race around it: Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is nappa cabbage, Bardock is burdock (gobō), Broly is broccoli, Paragus is asparagus, Turles is lettuce with the syllables scrambled, Cabba is cabbage, Caulifla is cauliflower, and Kale is kale. Only Goku's Earth family breaks the mold, because Gohan and Goten were named by humans.

To write a Saiyan OC name that sounds right, choose a real vegetable, herb, root, legume, or grain, then distort it the way Toriyama does: cut a syllable, swap or shift a vowel, harden the ending with a -k, -t, -z or -o. Two syllables with a hard stop is the classic Saiyan shape (Nappa, Broly, Cabba, Kale); three is fine (Kakarot, Caulifla), four starts to sound like a different race. Japanese produce is fair game and often less obvious to Western readers, which is why Daikan or Renkon feel fresh but authentic.

The list opens with canon Saiyans from Z, Super, Legends and the movies so you know the reference points, then moves into original names built on the same rule for Xenoverse characters, fanfiction OCs and Universe 6 or 7 warriors.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a vegetable no one has claimed. Carrot, cabbage, broccoli, radish and kale are canon; try celeriac, kohlrabi, daikon, okra or a legume instead.
  • Distort, don't just capitalize. Kakarot is not 'Carrot'; drop a letter or change a vowel so the pun is a beat delayed.
  • Give the name a hard ending. -k, -t, -z and -o endings (Bardock, Kakarot, Raditz, Nappa) sound more Saiyan than soft -a or -y endings.
  • For a fusion OC, splice two Saiyan names like Vegito (Vegeta + Kakarotto) or Gogeta (Goku + Vegeta) rather than inventing a third pun.
  • Female Saiyans use the exact same rule (Gine, Fasha, Caulifla, Kale), so any name here works for either sex.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a Saiyan name?

Take a vegetable, herb or grain and mangle it: shift a vowel, drop a syllable, or add a hard consonant. Toriyama turned carrot into Kakarot, radish into Raditz, and burdock into Bardock. The result should still be recognisable as a pun once you say it aloud.

Are these Saiyan names canon?

The first thirty or so are canon, including Goku, Vegeta, Bardock, Gine, Broly, Cabba, Caulifla, Kale, Cumber and Shallot. The rest are original vegetable, herb, legume and grain puns written to sit alongside them in a Dragon Ball fanfic or Xenoverse roster.

Why is Goku's name not a vegetable?

Goku's Saiyan birth name is Kakarot (carrot). Grandpa Gohan renamed him Son Goku after the Monkey King from Journey to the West, and his sons Gohan (rice) and Goten were named by his Earth family, so they follow food puns from Earth's side rather than Planet Vegeta's.

Can I use these names in Dragon Ball Xenoverse or fanfiction?

Yes. Original names here are free to use for any game character or story. Canon names like Goku and Vegeta belong to Akira Toriyama, Shueisha and Toei Animation, so use them for fan works only.
