About dragon ball names
Almost every name in Dragon Ball is a pun, and each race or faction has its own theme. Saiyans are vegetables: Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is a Japanese word for greens, Broly is broccoli, Cabba is cabbage, Caulifla is cauliflower and Kale is kale. Frieza's family are cold things (Frieza from freezer, Cooler, King Cold, Frost, Chilled), the Ginyu Force are dairy products (Ginyu is milk, Jeice is cheese, Burter is butter, Recoome is cream, Guldo is yogurt), and Frieza's other henchmen are fruit: Zarbon is pomelo, Dodoria is durian, Appule is apple, Cui is kiwi.
Namekians are named after snails and slugs (Namekuji means slug) or, for King Piccolo's brood and Kami's line, musical instruments: Piccolo, Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum, Piano. Bulma's family are underwear (Bulma is bloomers, Trunks, Bra, Dr. Brief, Tights). Gods of Destruction and Angels are alcoholic drinks: Beerus and Champa (beer, champagne), Whis and Vados (whisky, calvados), Belmod (vermouth), Marcarita (margarita). Majin Buu's line comes from the Cinderella spell Bibidi Babidi Boo, the Pilaf Gang and Chi-Chi's family are food, and the Heeters in Super are fuel and machinery: Gas, Oil, Elec, Macki. Even the Red Ribbon Army follows a rule, with officers named after colors and metals.
The list above collects canon names from every era of the franchise plus original names built on the same puns, so an OC Saiyan, a new Frieza Force officer or a Universe 6 rival will sound like they walked out of Toriyama's notebook.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the race first, then the pun theme: vegetables for Saiyans, cold words for Frieza's race, snails or instruments for Namekians, dairy for elite squads, fruit for Frieza's henchmen, drinks for gods and angels.
- Mangle the pun the way Toriyama does: drop a syllable, swap a vowel or reverse the word (Kakarot from carrot, Vegeta from vegetable, Gine from negi) so it reads as a name, not a grocery item.
- Keep OC names two or three syllables; nearly every major Dragon Ball character (Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Piccolo, Cell, Buu) is short enough to shout across a battlefield.
- Universe 6 Saiyans use leafy-vegetable names (Cabba, Caulifla, Kale) while Universe 7 uses root vegetables and staples, so a Universe 6 OC could be Chard or Sorrel and a Universe 7 OC Beets or Turnipa.
- For gods, angels or Kais, reach for lesser-known drinks (Sangria, Grappa, Awamo) rather than obvious ones already used like Beerus, Whis and Champa.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Dragon Ball characters named after food?
Akira Toriyama liked easy-to-remember gag names and gave each group a shared theme: Saiyans are vegetables, Frieza's family are cold things, Namekians are snails and instruments, the Ginyu Force are dairy, Bulma's family are underwear, and gods and angels are alcoholic drinks. It makes new characters instantly recognizable as part of a faction.
What vegetable is Goku's name based on?
Goku's Saiyan birth name Kakarot (Kakarotto) is a play on carrot. Goku itself comes from Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Journey to the West, on which the original Dragon Ball was loosely based.
How should I name a Saiyan OC?
Take a vegetable that has not been used yet (parsnip, daikon, endive, okra, kohlrabi), then shorten or twist it into a two- or three-syllable name like Parsnak, Endiva or Kohl. Universe 6 Saiyans tend toward leafy greens, Universe 7 toward roots and staples.
Can I use these names for a fan character or game?
Yes. Original pun names are free to use for OCs, fan fiction, roleplay and custom characters in games like Xenoverse. Canon character names and the Dragon Ball brand belong to Akira Toriyama, Shueisha and Toei Animation.
