About dragon ball saiyan names
Every Saiyan in Dragon Ball is named after a vegetable, and Akira Toriyama disguised the pun just enough that most viewers never notice. Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is a Japanese word for leafy greens, Bardock is burdock, Gine comes from negi (spring onion), Broly is broccoli, Paragus is asparagus, Tarble is vegetable with the front cut off, and Turles is lettuce with its letters scrambled. Bardock's squad continues the joke: Tora (tomato), Fasha (parsley, in Japanese Selypa), Borgos (gobo, burdock) and Shugesh (spinach). Universe 6 Saiyans keep the theme with leafy vegetables: Cabba (cabbage), Caulifla (cauliflower), Kale and Renso (lettuce, in Japanese lettuce again reversed).
A good original Saiyan name therefore starts with a vegetable, herb or legume that has not been used, then twists it into a name that sounds like a warrior. Drop a syllable (Parsnak from parsnip), swap a vowel (Endiva from endive), reverse it (Turles), or borrow the Japanese word (Nasu for eggplant, Daikon, Kabocha, Gobo). Two or three syllables is the norm; Saiyans bark their names in battle and nothing longer than Kakarot has ever stuck. There are no family surnames, though royals take a title (King Vegeta, Prince Vegeta) and half-Saiyans raised on Earth get Earth-style names like Gohan and Trunks.
The list above blends canon Saiyans from every era with more than 150 original vegetable-pun names, split between rougher-sounding options that suit low-class warriors and softer forms that work well for female Saiyans and Universe 6 characters.
Tips for choosing a name
- Start with an unused vegetable, herb or legume, then mangle it: reverse it, cut a syllable, or swap a vowel until it sounds like a name rather than a grocery item (Salsify becomes Salsifa, Kohlrabi becomes Kohlrab).
- Female Saiyans in canon (Gine, Fasha, Caulifla, Kale) end in soft vowels or -a, so adding -a, -ina or -ette to a vegetable stem gives an instantly female-sounding name.
- Use Japanese vegetable words for a deeper cut: Nasu (eggplant), Daikon, Kabocha (squash), Gobo (burdock), Negi (leek) all follow Toriyama's own habit with Nappa and Gine.
- Match rank to sound: harsh consonant clusters (Bardock, Raditz, Broly) suit low-class fighters and elites like Nappa, while royalty in canon uses the plainest pun of all, Vegeta.
- Skip surnames; Saiyans have none. If a character is half-Saiyan raised on Earth, an Earth-style pun (Trunks, Gohan, Pan) is more authentic than a vegetable name.
Frequently asked questions
What vegetables are the main Saiyans named after?
Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is leafy greens (nappa cabbage), Bardock is burdock, Gine is spring onion (negi), Broly is broccoli, Paragus is asparagus, Turles is lettuce scrambled, Cabba is cabbage, Caulifla is cauliflower and Kale is kale.
Do Saiyans have last names?
No. Saiyans go by a single vegetable-pun name; royalty adds a title (King Vegeta, Prince Vegeta) and Earth-raised half-Saiyans like Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Pan use Earth-style pun names instead. Goku's Earth surname Son comes from Journey to the West rather than Saiyan tradition.
How do I name a female Saiyan OC?
Follow the same vegetable rule but end on a soft vowel: Gine, Fasha, Caulifla and Kale all do. Endiva, Celeria, Radisha, Kalette or Zucchina sound like they belong on Planet Vegeta or in Universe 6.
Can I use these Saiyan names for a Xenoverse character or fan fiction?
Yes. Original pun names are free to use for OCs, fan fiction, roleplay and custom fighters in Xenoverse, FighterZ or Sparking Zero. Canon names and Dragon Ball itself belong to Akira Toriyama, Shueisha and Toei Animation.
