Saiyan names are vegetable puns, but they are almost never the vegetable spelled straight. Vegeta drops the end of vegetable, Raditz twists radish, Nappa is nappa cabbage, Bardock is burdock, Broly is broccoli, Kakarot is carrot with a Japanese accent, and Turles is an anagram of lettuce. Even minor characters follow the rule: Toma (tomato), Toteppo (potato), Borgos (gobo, burdock root), Panbukin (pumpkin), and the newer Cabba (cabbage), Cumber (cucumber), Shallot and Giblet from Legends. Fusions simply splice two names, as in Gogeta and Vegito.

The trick to an authentic male Saiyan name is to distort the vegetable enough that it sounds like a warrior rather than a grocery list. Clip a syllable (Sparag from asparagus, Kohlrab from kohlrabi), swap letters (Radeesh, Turnyp, Skwash), or add a hard consonant ending (Beeto, Cumbo, Turlok). Two-syllable names with a strong stop consonant read best beside Vegeta and Nappa; leafy herbs like Bazil or Kumin suit lower-class or scout Saiyans, while roots and gourds sound heavier and more elite.
