Roll random Saiyan names that follow Dragon Ball's real naming rule: every Saiyan is a twisted vegetable pun, from Kakarot (carrot) to Broly (broccoli). Includes canon Saiyans plus original names built the same way for your OC.

About random saiyan names

Akira Toriyama named every Saiyan after a vegetable, then bent the word until it sounded like a warrior. Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is a Japanese word for greens, Broly is broccoli, Cabba is cabbage, Caulifla is cauliflower, and Kale is simply kale. Even the Saiyan homeworld's royal name is a joke: Vegeta and his father King Vegeta are both, literally, Vegetable. Fusions blend two names (Vegito, Gogeta), and Goku's Earth-side family breaks the pattern on purpose because Gohan (rice) and Goten were named by Earthlings.

A convincing new Saiyan name therefore starts with a real vegetable, herb, legume, or grain and then gets roughed up: drop a syllable, swap a vowel, add a hard consonant so it lands like a punch. Toriyama used Japanese produce as often as Western produce, which is why names like Daikon, Gobo, or Negi sound right at home next to Turles or Tarble. Two-syllable names with a strong stop (Nappa, Broly, Cabba) are the sweet spot; anything longer starts to sound like a Namekian.

The list mixes canon Saiyans from Z, GT, Super, Xenoverse, and Legends with fresh vegetable-pun names for original characters, so you can pull an established warrior or an unclaimed one for your Universe 6 or Universe 7 OC.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Start from an obscure vegetable. Carrot and cabbage are taken; try daikon, celeriac, or kohlrabi and mangle it until it sounds aggressive.
  • Keep it to two syllables where you can. Nappa, Broly, Cabba, and Kale hit harder than a four-syllable pun.
  • Match your Saiyan's era: Universe 6 Saiyans (Cabba, Caulifla, Kale) keep the vegetable almost intact, while Bardock's crew (Tora, Fasha, Shugesh) mangle it more.
  • For a fusion character, splice the front of one name onto the back of the other, the way Vegito and Gogeta do.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Saiyans named after vegetables?

It is Toriyama's running gag: each Dragon Ball race has a food theme, and Saiyans got vegetables. Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, and Broly is broccoli, while Frieza's family are cold puns and Namekians are snails and slugs.

Are these Saiyan names canon?

Many are, including Goku, Vegeta, Bardock, Gine, Turles, Cabba, Caulifla, and Shallot from Dragon Ball Legends. The rest are original vegetable, herb, and grain puns written to match the same rule so they slot into a Dragon Ball fanfic without standing out.

Can Saiyan names work for female characters?

Yes. Canon female Saiyans like Gine, Fasha, Caulifla, and Kale use exactly the same vegetable-pun rule as the men, so any name in this list can go to a female Saiyan; there is no gendered convention on Planet Vegeta.
