About dragon ball demon names

Dragon Ball's demons follow the same rule as every other race in the series: each group gets a pun theme, and the names are that theme chopped into two or three bouncy syllables. Dabura comes from abracadabra and Mechikabura from "mechicka boola", so magic words belong to the Demon Realm royalty. Dragon Ball Online, Xenoverse and Super Dragon Ball Heroes then gave the realm a second theme, sauces and condiments: Demigra is demi-glace, Putine is poutine, Chamel is bechamel, and Gravy, Salsa and Shroom need no explanation. Towa and Mira break the mould with the Japanese words for eternity and future, fitting for a pair of Time Breakers.

Older demons have their own flavours. King Piccolo's Demon Clan spawned musical instruments (Piano, Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum), Garlic Jr.'s Makyans are seasonings (Ginger, Sansho, Spice, Vinegar, Mustard, Salt), Yakon's homeworld is named for darkness, and Janemba is built from janen, a wicked thought. Hell itself is run by King Yemma and his ogres Goz and Mez.

This generator mixes those canon names with originals cut from the same cloth: French and Asian sauces, hot peppers and spices, stage-magic patter, Japanese words for curses, hell and darkness, kitchen verbs like flambé and sear, and a few titled Demon Realm nobles for Xenoverse and Heroes OCs.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the theme to the faction: magic words or sauces for the Demon Realm, instruments for King Piccolo's spawn, seasonings for Makyans, and dark or cursed Japanese words for stray Hell-born monsters like Janemba.
  • Clip the pun until it sounds like a name, not a menu item. Canon trims to two or three syllables (Demigra, Putine, Chamel); a whole word like Hollandaise gives the joke away and reads clumsily in dialogue.
  • Save titles for the top of the hierarchy. Demon King Dabura, Demon God Towa and Dark King Mechikabura work because they are rare; a squad of soldiers should just be Rouxel, Zatar and Piripir.
  • Check the name against the other races' themes before you commit: vegetables belong to Saiyans, dairy to the Ginyu Force, cold words to Frieza's family, and slugs or instruments to Namekians. Overlap makes your demon read as the wrong species.
  • For a Xenoverse or Heroes Demon Realm OC, pick something that can take a prefix later, since Demon God, Dark and Xeno forms are standard story beats.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Demon Realm characters in Dragon Ball named after?

The original Demon Realm royalty use magic words: Dabura is abracadabra and Mechikabura is from the Cinderella song's "mechicka boola". The newer Heroes and Xenoverse demons use sauces and condiments, such as Demigra (demi-glace), Putine (poutine), Chamel (bechamel), Gravy, Salsa and Shroom. Towa and Mira are Japanese for eternity and future.

Is Majin Buu a demon in Dragon Ball?

Not in the Demon Realm sense. Majin are a separate magical race created by Bibidi, with their own theme of Cinderella spell words. Dabura served Babidi but belongs to the Demon Realm, which is why this page focuses on him, Towa, Mira, Mechikabura, Janemba, King Piccolo's clan and the Makyans rather than Buu. We have a separate Majin name generator.

Are these names usable for a Xenoverse 2 Demon Realm character?

Yes. The original names here are built to sit beside Towa, Mira and Demigra: short sauce, spice and spell-word puns plus a few with Demon Realm titles. Pick one that still sounds right if a Demon God or Dark King prefix is added later.

Why are King Piccolo's children counted as demons?

In the original Dragon Ball, King Piccolo and his offspring were called the Demon Clan (Mazoku) before Namekians were introduced. Their instrument names, Piano, Tambourine, Cymbal and Drum, set the precedent for naming a demon faction after a single theme, so they are included alongside Demon Realm and Hell characters.
