Generate Dragon Ball Z names that follow Toriyama's pun rules: vegetable names for Saiyans, slugs and instruments for Namekians, underwear for the Briefs family, cold puns for Frieza's clan and dairy for the Ginyu Force, plus fusion names for your OCs.

About dbz names

Almost every name in Dragon Ball Z is a pun, and each race or family has its own theme. Saiyans are vegetables: Kakarot (carrot), Vegeta (vegetable), Raditz (radish), Nappa (Japanese for greens), Broly (broccoli), Cabba (cabbage), Caulifla and Kale. Namekians are slugs and instruments (Nail, Dende from denden-mushi meaning snail, Piccolo, Cymbal, Drum). Frieza's family are cold words (Frieza, Cooler, King Cold, Frost, Chilled), the Ginyu Force are dairy products (Ginyu from gyunyu meaning milk, Jeice from cheese, Burter from butter, Recoome from cream, Guldo from yogurt), and the Briefs family are underwear (Bulma from bloomers, Trunks, Bulla from bra, Dr. Briefs, Tights). Earthlings are food too: Chi-Chi (milk), Yamcha (dim sum), Chiaotzu (dumpling).

Fusion names splice the two originals: Goku plus Vegeta gives Gogeta (dance) or Vegito (Potara), Goten plus Trunks gives Gotenks, Kale plus Caulifla gives Kefla. Dragon Ball Super keeps the tradition going with the Heeters (Gas, Elec, Maki, Oil) and Broly's crew (Cheelai from chili, Lemo from lemon).

To name an original character, pick the right pun category for their race, then twist a real word until it sounds like a name: two syllables, a hard consonant, an odd letter swap. Beets, Chard, Parsni and Zucchi sound like Saiyans; Marimba and Ocarina sound Namekian; Sleet and Glacia belong on Frieza's ship.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Start with the race: vegetables for Saiyans, cold words for Frieza's clan, instruments or snails for Namekians, dairy for Ginyu-style squads, underwear for a Briefs relative.
  • Mangle the word slightly so it reads as a name, not a grocery item: Radish becomes Raditz, Cabbage becomes Cabba, Cauliflower becomes Caulifla.
  • For a fusion OC, take the first half of one name and the second half of the other (Go-geta, Ve-gito, Ke-fla) and check that both parents' names are still audible.
  • Keep Saiyan names to two or three syllables and rough sounding; softer names like Gine and Fasha work for characters written as gentler.
  • Use Japanese pronunciations for extra authenticity: Kakarotto, Bejita, Furiza, Kuririn are how the names appear in Japanese media.

Frequently asked questions

Why are all Saiyan names vegetables?

Akira Toriyama built Dragon Ball naming on food puns. Saiyan itself is an anagram of yasai (vegetable), so Kakarot is carrot, Vegeta is vegetable, Raditz is radish, Nappa is greens, Broly is broccoli, Cabba is cabbage and Caulifla is cauliflower.

How do DBZ fusion names work?

Fusion Dance names combine the start of one name with the end of the other (Goku + Vegeta = Gogeta, Goten + Trunks = Gotenks), while Potara fusions often reverse the order (Vegeta + Kakarot = Vegito, Kale + Caulifla = Kefla). Any two names can be spliced the same way for an OC.

What are Namekian names based on?

Two themes: slugs and snails (Nail from snail, Dende from denden-mushi, Slug, Cargo from escargot) and musical instruments (Piccolo, Cymbal, Drum, Tambourine, Piano). Nameless Namekians follow either pattern.

Can I use these names for Xenoverse, FighterZ or fanfiction OCs?

Yes. Canon names belong to Toei, Shueisha and Bird Studio, so use them for fan works only, but the invented pun names in this list are free to use for OCs in games, art and fanfiction.
