Generate Norse country names built the way the Vikings actually named their lands: compounds of nature, gods, beasts and direction words with endings like -land, -mork, -riki, -fold and -heimr. Includes authentic Old Norse regional names, mythic realms and readable anglicized versions for fantasy maps, Bannerlord-style kingdoms and D&D campaigns.

About norse country names

Norse country names are almost always compounds, and the second half tells you what kind of place it is. -Land is the plain word for a people's territory (Ísland, Grœnland, Hálogaland). -Mǫrk, usually written -mark or -mork, means a border forest or march (Danmǫrk, Finnmǫrk, Þelamǫrk). -Ríki is a realm or kingdom (Garðaríki, Raumaríki). -Fold is a flat coastal plain (Vestfold), -heimr a home or world (Jǫtunheimr, Þrándheimr), and -eyjar marks an island group (Orkneyjar, Færeyjar). The first half is usually a people (Gautar, Svíar), a god (Þórr, Freyja), a direction (norðr, austr), a beast (ulfr, hrafn, bjǫrn) or a landscape word (fjall, frost, járn).

This generator mixes three registers so you can match your setting. There are authentic Viking-age regions and trade-route lands (Hǫrðaland, Jamtaland, Miklagarðsríki, Vínland), mythic realms from the Eddas (Vanaheimr, Fólkvangr, Niflmark), and new coinages built from the same parts (Ulfríki, Hvítaland, Jarnmork). A final group gives readable English-style forms such as Ravensfold, Ironfjord and The Frost Marches for maps where players won't be comfortable with Old Norse spelling.

Pick the suffix that fits the political reality: -ríki for a true kingdom, -mark for a wild frontier, -land for a settled people's homeland, and -eyjar for a sea-kingdom of islands.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the suffix to the kind of state: -riki for a kingdom with a king, -mark for a contested border region, -land for a homeland named after its people, -eyjar for islands.
  • Name the land after its people, not the other way round, for the most authentic feel: Gautar live in Gautland, Svíar in Sviariki. Invent the tribe first, then the country.
  • Use direction words (Nordr, Sudr, Austr, Vestr) for lands named by outsiders, the way Norðvegr meant 'the north way' and Austrvegr the eastern trade route.
  • Keep spelling consistent across your map: either full Old Norse style (ð, þ, ǫ) or plain anglicized forms (Thorsmork, Ravensfold), not a mix in the same legend.
  • For Bannerlord, Crusader Kings or D&D, give the realm a short spoken form as well (Hvalfell for the Jarldom of Hvalfell) so players actually use it at the table.

Frequently asked questions

How did the Vikings actually name countries and regions?

Mostly as compounds: a people, god, animal, direction or landscape word plus a suffix like -land (territory), -mork (border forest), -riki (realm), -fold (coastal plain) or -eyjar (islands). Norway itself is Norðvegr, 'the north way', and Denmark is Danmǫrk, 'the Danes' border land'.

Are these real Old Norse place names or made up?

Both. The list includes genuine Viking-age regions and sagas' names for foreign lands (Hordaland, Jamtaland, Gardariki, Vinland), mythic realms from Norse mythology, and new names built with the same roots and suffixes so they sit naturally beside the real ones.

Can I use these for a fantasy kingdom in D&D, Bannerlord or a novel?

Yes. For Norse-flavored human cultures in a fantasy setting, pick the coined names or the anglicized forms (Ironfjord, Ravensfold) so they don't clash with real-world history, and save the authentic regional names for historical or alt-history games.

What is the difference between -land, -mark and -riki?

-Land is neutral, the territory of a people. -Mark (mǫrk) originally meant a forested borderland, so it suits frontiers and marches. -Riki means rule or realm, so it implies a single king or lord holding the whole country.
