Norse Country Name Generator

Norse country names are almost always compounds, and the second half tells you what kind of place it is. -Land is the plain word for a people's territory (Ísland, Grœnland, Hálogaland). -Mǫrk, usually written -mark or -mork, means a border forest or march (Danmǫrk, Finnmǫrk, Þelamǫrk). -Ríki is a realm or kingdom (Garðaríki, Raumaríki). -Fold is a flat coastal plain (Vestfold), -heimr a home or world (Jǫtunheimr, Þrándheimr), and -eyjar marks an island group (Orkneyjar, Færeyjar). The first half is usually a people (Gautar, Svíar), a god (Þórr, Freyja), a direction (norðr, austr), a beast (ulfr, hrafn, bjǫrn) or a landscape word (fjall, frost, járn).

This generator mixes three registers so you can match your setting. There are authentic Viking-age regions and trade-route lands (Hǫrðaland, Jamtaland, Miklagarðsríki, Vínland), mythic realms from the Eddas (Vanaheimr, Fólkvangr, Niflmark), and new coinages built from the same parts (Ulfríki, Hvítaland, Jarnmork). A final group gives readable English-style forms such as Ravensfold, Ironfjord and The Frost Marches for maps where players won't be comfortable with Old Norse spelling.

Pick the suffix that fits the political reality: -ríki for a true kingdom, -mark for a wild frontier, -land for a settled people's homeland, and -eyjar for a sea-kingdom of islands.
