Medieval Country Name Generator

Medieval countries were rarely called countries. Europe between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance was a patchwork of kingdoms, duchies, counties, marches (border provinces ruled by a margrave or marquis), prince-bishoprics, free imperial cities and merchant republics, all nested inside or alongside one another. The name usually paired the rank of the ruler with a territory: Duchy of Normandy, County of Flanders, March of Brandenburg, Republic of Venice. Early kingdoms were often named for their people rather than their land, which is why we have the Kingdom of the Franks and the Kingdom of the Lombards before France and Lombardy existed.

The territory names themselves come from a few sources. Some are tribal (Wessex means West Saxons, Mercia means the border people), some are geographic (Northumbria is north of the Humber, Ostmark is the eastern march), and many are Latinised (Aquitania, Lotharingia, named after King Lothair). Names ending in -ia, -mark, -land, -shire and -march instantly read as medieval because those endings were how scribes labelled regions.

For worldbuilding, the trick is to imitate this hierarchy rather than name every realm a Kingdom. A single kingdom surrounded by squabbling duchies, a coastal republic and a border march gives a map political texture. Mixing real historical names with invented ones that follow the same rules produces a setting that feels lived in.
