Generate names from across Norse mythology: gods and giants with their epithets, saga heroes and valkyries, the Nine Realms and their halls, legendary weapons, and mythic beasts. Ideal for Viking-inspired fantasy, character sheets, ship names, and worldbuilding.

About norse mythology names

Norse mythology names cover far more than the gods. The Poetic Edda, Snorri's Prose Edda, and the legendary sagas together supply the Nine Realms and their halls (Valhalla, Bilskirnir, Sessrúmnir), the treasures the dwarves forged (Mjölnir, Gungnir, Draupnir), the beasts that will end the world (Fenrir, Jörmungandr, Níðhöggr), the valkyries who choose the slain, and human heroes such as Sigurðr Fáfnisbani and Ragnarr Loðbrók whose stories bleed into myth. Together they form a naming vocabulary that Tolkien, Marvel, God of War, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla have all drawn from.

Two habits give Norse mythological names their sound. First, epithets: gods and heroes are known by descriptive bynames, sometimes as patronymics (Loki Laufeyjarson, Nanna Nepsdóttir), sometimes as deeds or traits (Ívarr the Boneless, Sigurðr Snake-in-the-Eye, Höðr the Blind). Second, transparent compounds: many names are literally readable, as in Ginnungagap (yawning void), Fimbulvetr (great winter), Brísingamen (necklace of the Brísings), and Gjallarhorn (yelling horn). Knowing this, you can coin a name like Járnviðr (Iron-wood) or Þrúðheimr (Strength-home) that sits comfortably alongside the real ones.

Use the god and hero names for characters, the realm and hall names for locations, and the artifact names for weapons, ships, and quests.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Combine a base name with an epithet in the saga style, for example Hervör Sword-Bearer or Egill One-Eye, to make a mortal character sound legendary without giving them a god's name.
  • Hall names ending in -heimr (home) or -salir (halls) and place names ending in -völlr (field) or -garðr (enclosure) are the easiest patterns to reuse for invented locations.
  • Artifact names (Tyrfingr, Dáinsleif, Skíðblaðnir) are excellent for ships, guild halls, and magic items in tabletop games because they already sound named-by-a-smith.
  • Reserve the world-ending names (Ragnarök, Fimbulvetr, Naglfar) for climactic events or antagonists; overusing them dilutes their weight.
  • The ð and þ characters can be replaced with d and th (Sigurdr, Thrudheimr) if your platform does not support them; keep the accented vowels if you can, since they mark long vowels.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Nine Realms in Norse mythology?

The sources never list them neatly, but the usual reconstruction is Asgard (gods), Vanaheim (Vanir), Álfheim (light elves), Midgard (humans), Jötunheim (giants), Svartálfheim or Niðavellir (dwarves), Niflheim (ice and mist), Muspelheim (fire), and Hel or Helheim (the dead), all held in the branches and roots of Yggdrasil.

Are Ragnar Lothbrok and Sigurd real people or myths?

Sigurðr the dragon-slayer is purely legendary, with roots in Germanic heroic poetry. Ragnarr Loðbrók is semi-legendary: the sagas about him are largely fiction, but his supposed sons Ívarr and Björn correspond to Viking leaders recorded in ninth-century chronicles.

What is the difference between Norse mythology names and Viking names?

Viking names are the ordinary Old Norse personal names historical Scandinavians used, such as Þorsteinn, Ragnhildr, or Eiríkr. Norse mythology names are those of gods, giants, heroes, places, and objects from the myths. Real Vikings often built their names from divine elements (Þor-, Frey-, Ás-) without using a god's full name.

Can I use these names in a commercial game or book?

Yes. Names from the Eddas and sagas are centuries old and public domain. Only avoid the specific reinterpretations owned by modern franchises, such as Marvel's version of Thor or particular God of War characters.
