Generate halfling country names for whole homelands rather than single villages: shires and ridings like The Greenhollow Shire, farming commonwealths such as Commonwealth of the Quiet Hills, river nations like The Towpath Republic, and one-word lands like Hearthvale and Littlemoot.

About halfling country names

A halfling country is rarely an empire. In many fantasy settings the small folk govern themselves through mayors, reeves and seasonal moots, so their homelands borrow the words of old English local government rather than of thrones: shire, riding, hundred, tithing, moot. Tolkien set the pattern with a Shire divided into four Farthings whose chief official is an elected Mayor, and D&D settings followed with the farming nation of Luiren in the Forgotten Realms and the nomad tribes of Eberron's Talenta Plains.

This list of 1,000 names works at that country scale. It mixes shires and ridings (The Greenhollow Shire, The Three Ridings of Appledown), river vales and downs, farming commonwealths and moot-lands, barge nations for lightfoot wanderers, hill realms for the stouts, wagon nations of the plains, orchard and pipe-leaf country, border marches and reaches, coastal fens and isles, and protectorates that pay a polite tribute to a taller crown. One-word lands such as Hearthvale and Littlemoot sit beside old kingdoms told with halfling understatement, like The Kingdom of Quite Enough.

The recipe is a homely first half (a crop, a hedge plant, a kitchen word, a small bird) joined to a form that says how the land is run. Change the form and the same land reads as free, federated or protected.

How to choose halfling country names

  • Choose the form from how the land is governed: commonwealth, mayoralty or moot for elected mayors and reeves, protectorate or crown shire for a land under a big-folk ruler, and plain shire, vale or downs where nobody is much in charge.
  • Riding originally meant a third part of a shire, so The Three Ridings of Appledown is the traditional count. Name each riding by direction on your map.
  • Match the land to the folk: river and wagon nations such as The Free Barges of the Long River or The Wain Nation of the Grass Sea suit lightfoot wanderers, while The Deepknoll Holdfast suits stouts.
  • Give the country two names: the short one halflings say at home (Hearthvale) and the formal one on big-folk maps (The Protectorate of Brambleford).
  • Fill the country with settlements from a halfling village list and reuse one crop or hedge plant across both, so the land and its villages feel related.

Frequently asked questions

What do you call a halfling country?

Usually not a kingdom. Halfling lands in fantasy tend to be shires, vales, marches, commonwealths or moot-lands run by mayors and reeves, with names such as The Greenhollow Shire, Underbough March or Commonwealth of the Quiet Hills. Kingdom suits an older or grander realm, often said with a wink, as in The Kingdom of Quite Enough.

How is this different from the halfling village name generator?

The village page names single settlements: burrows, lanes and market greens. This page names the land those villages sit in, so every entry carries or implies a country-sized form such as shire, riding, reaches, downs or protectorate. Use the two together, one for the title of the map and one for its dots.

Are these names from D&D or Tolkien?

No. The 1,000 names are drafted in the general style of halfling homelands and none is presented as canon to any setting. Established lands such as Tolkien's Shire, Luiren in the Forgotten Realms or the Talenta Plains of Eberron belong to their own worlds and are best kept for games set there.

Which names suit lightfoot and stout halflings?

Lightfoot wanderers fit the river and plains nations, for example The Towpath Republic, The Rolling Hundreds or The Nation on Wheels. Stouts fit the hill realms, such as The Stoutmark, The Burrow Counties or The Hearthstone Holds.
