Viking Kingdom Name Generator
Norse realms, petty kingdoms, and sea-jarldoms
Generate Viking kingdom names drawn from the way Norse realms were actually named: historical kingdoms like Vestfold, Hálogaland and Jórvík, Old Norse compounds ending in -ríki, -land, -mörk and -heimr, and readable English forms such as Kingdom of Skjoldmark or the Jarldom of Skarvik. Built for worldbuilding, Norse RPGs, Crusader Kings and Bannerlord campaigns, and saga-style fiction.
About Viking kingdom names
The Viking Age did not have one Viking kingdom. It had dozens of small realms that were slowly swallowed by the crowns of Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and their names follow a few clear patterns. Most were named for the land itself: Vestfold (the western fold of the Oslofjord), Hálogaland (land of the northern lights), Hörðaland (land of the Hörðar tribe), Raumaríki and Hringaríki (realm of the Raumar, realm of the Ringer). Abroad, Norse rulers named their conquests after the town they held, so the Kingdom of Jórvík, Dyflin and Veðrafjörðr were all kingdoms of a single fortified port.
The building blocks are short and reusable. Ríki means realm, land means land, mörk is a border forest or march, fold is a flat plain, heimr a home, garðr an enclosure or stronghold, and vík a bay. Put a tribe, animal, founder or feature in front of one of those and you have a name that sounds like it belongs in Heimskringla: Úlfríki, Hrafnmörk, Kingdom of Ketilsfjord.
The list mixes real Norse kingdoms and earldoms, Old Norse compounds with their accents, and English-spelled forms that work in a game lobby or a fantasy map. Pick the register that matches your project and keep it consistent across every realm on the map.
How to choose Viking kingdom names
- Decide the scale first: a petty kingdom covers one fjord or valley (Sogn, Hadaland), a sea-kingdom is a chain of islands (Suðreyjar, Orkneyjar), and a high kingdom such as Noregr is the crown that swallowed them all.
- Name overseas Viking kingdoms after their chief port, exactly as the Norse did with Jórvík and Dyflin; the kingdom and its capital share a name.
- For an invented realm, combine one concrete element (wolf, raven, iron, frost, a founder's name) with one land word (-ríki, -land, -mörk, -fold, -heimr) rather than stacking two abstract words.
- Old Norse letters such as ð, þ, œ and ö add authenticity in prose; drop them (Ulfriki, Thelamork) for game servers, maps, or anywhere fonts are unreliable, and stay consistent.
- Attach a ruling dynasty or a banner to each kingdom (the Ynglingar of Vestfold, the Raven Banner of Orkney) so the name carries a story, not just a location.
Frequently asked questions
What were real Viking kingdoms called?
Before unification Norway alone held petty kingdoms such as Vestfold, Rogaland, Hörðaland, Sogn, Hálogaland, Raumaríki and Hringaríki. Danes ruled Jótland, Selund and Skáney, the Svear held Svealand and Uppland, and Norse rulers abroad held the Kingdom of Jórvík (York), the Kingdom of Dublin, the Kingdom of the Isles, the Earldom of Orkney and Garðaríki in the east.
How do I make an invented Viking kingdom name sound authentic?
Use a real Old Norse land word as the ending: -ríki (realm), -land, -mörk (march or forest), -fold (plain), -heimr (home), -garðr (stronghold) or -vík (bay). Pair it with a single concrete first element such as a tribe, animal, colour, or founder. Two-part names like Úlfríki, Járnmörk or Ketilsfjord follow the same logic as Hálogaland and Raumaríki.
What is the difference between a kingdom and a jarldom?
A jarl was a noble ruling a region either independently or on behalf of a king; the Jarls of Hlaðir (Lade) and the Jarls of Orkney were often kings in all but title. In fiction a jarldom works well for a powerful province or an island earldom, while a kingdom implies a crowned ruler with his own law and coinage.
Can I use these names for Crusader Kings, Bannerlord, Valheim or a novel?
Yes. The historical names are public knowledge and the invented ones are free to use. For games that cannot display Old Norse characters, choose the English-spelled forms such as Kingdom of Skjoldmark or the Jarldom of Skarvik, which were written to read cleanly in any font.
