Generate Norse kingdom names in three registers: the historical petty kingdoms and saga realms of Scandinavia (Vestfold, Hleiðra, Reiðgotaland, Garðaríki), the mythic realms of the Eddas (Ásgarðr, Jötunheimr, Glaðsheimr), and invented Old Norse and Scandinavian-style names such as Hrafnsríki, Jökulheimr and Skjoldgard for worldbuilding, RPG campaigns and fiction.
About norse kingdom names
Norse kingdom names come from two traditions that are easy to blend. The first is historical: the petty kingdoms of Viking Age Scandinavia were named for the land or the people, so Vestfold is the western fold of the Oslofjord, Hálogaland the land of the northern lights, Raumaríki the realm of the Raumar, and Garðaríki the realm of strongholds that Swedish Rus founded in the east. Saga kingdoms such as Hleiðra and Reiðgotaland sit between history and legend, and dynasties named realms too: the Ynglings, Skjöldungs and Völsungs. The second tradition is mythic. The Nine Worlds of the Eddas are kingdoms in their own right, with Ásgarðr, Jötunheimr, Vanaheimr and Niflheimr built on exactly the same word-endings as the human realms.
Those endings are the key to anything invented. Ríki is a realm, land is land, heimr a home-world, mörk a border forest, fold a plain, garðr an enclosure or stronghold, vellir a field, ey an island. Put one concrete thing in front (an animal, a metal, a god, a founder, a colour) and you get names that sit comfortably beside the real ones: Hrafnsríki, Jökulheimr, Óðinsey, Ketilsvellir. Modern Scandinavian spellings (Ravnheim, Skjoldgard, Ulvsund) give the same effect without special characters. Whichever register you choose, keep it consistent across the whole realm list.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick one spelling system for the map: accented Old Norse (Jökulheimr, Hrafnsríki) for prose and lore documents, or plain Scandinavian forms (Ravnheim, Skjoldgard, Ulvsund) for games and anything that will be typed often.
- Name a kingdom the way the Norse did: after the land (Vestfold, Hálogaland), the people (Raumaríki, Gautland) or the ruling family (Ynglingaríki, Skjöldungaríki), not after an abstract virtue.
- Use the mythic realms as a model for scale. A heimr is a whole world, a ríki a realm with a king, a mörk a frontier march, a jarldom one valley or island chain held by a jarl under a greater crown.
- Give each realm a seat and a banner (the High Seat of Uppsala, the Raven Throne) so the name carries a political story rather than just a location.
- If you need several kingdoms, vary the endings and the first elements; a map full of names ending in -heim reads as one realm with provinces, not a region of rivals.
Frequently asked questions
What were the real Norse kingdoms called?
Before Harald Fairhair united Norway it held petty kingdoms such as Vestfold, Hörðaland, Rogaland, Hálogaland, Raumaríki, Hringaríki, Agðir and Þrándheimr. The Danes held Jótland, Selund and Skáney with a legendary seat at Hleiðra; the Svear held Svealand and Uppland; Norse settlers founded Garðaríki in the east, Jórvík and Dyflin in the west, and the island realms of Orkneyjar and Suðreyjar.
What are the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology?
The sources never list them in one place, but the usual count is Ásgarðr (the gods), Vanaheimr (the Vanir), Álfheimr (light elves), Miðgarðr (humans), Jötunheimr (giants), Svartálfaheimr or Niðavellir (dwarves), Niflheimr (ice and mist), Múspellsheimr (fire) and Hel (the dead). Halls inside them such as Valhöll, Glaðsheimr and Fólkvangr also work as realm names.
How do I invent a Norse kingdom name that sounds authentic?
Combine a single concrete first element with a real Old Norse land word. Animals (úlfr, hrafn, björn), metals (járn, gull), weather (frost, hrím, vindr), gods (Þórr, Óðinn, Freyr) and founders (Haraldr, Ketill) all work. Endings: -ríki (realm), -land, -heimr (home), -mörk (march), -fold (plain), -garðr (stronghold), -vellir (fields), -ey (island). Hrafnsríki and Ketilsvellir follow the same logic as Raumaríki and Þingvellir.
Can I use these names for a game, a novel or a D&D campaign?
Yes. The historical and mythological names are public knowledge and the invented ones are free to use. For Crusader Kings, Bannerlord, Valheim servers or anything with limited fonts, choose the plain forms such as Skjoldgard, Ravnheim or Kingdom of Hrafnsey; save the ð, þ and ö spellings for printed lore.
