Generate fantasy country names with the weight of real nations: Latinate empires, Germanic marches, desert sultanates, island republics and northern jarldoms. Made for worldbuilders drawing maps, novelists naming kingdoms, and game masters who need a rival nation by Saturday.

About fantasy country names

Real country names come from a small number of sources: a founding people (France from the Franks, England from the Angles), a geographic feature (Iceland, Montenegro, Netherlands), a ruler or dynasty (Saudi Arabia, Bolivia), or an old word for 'the land of us' (Deutschland, Nihon). Fantasy country names that follow the same logic feel like they have history behind them. Names ending in -ia, -land, -mark, -holm, -reach and -vale each carry a different flavour: Latinate -ia for old empires and republics, Germanic -mark and -holm for northern kingdoms and border marches, -reach and -vale for frontier realms named by settlers.

The form of government belongs in the full name even if everyone uses the short form. 'Serene Republic of Meridiana', 'Khanate of Turghal' and 'Grand Duchy of Belmont' each tell you who rules, how big the place is and roughly what its neighbours think of it. Real maps also carry descriptive regions that are not countries at all, such as the Silver Marches or the Ashen Steppe, and mixing a few of these among your nations makes the map read as geography rather than a list of tidy borders.

This list spans linguistic families from Latinate, Celtic, Norse and Slavic to Arabic, Persian, Indic, steppe, Finnic, East Asian, Pacific and Mesoamerican-inspired, plus founder-named countries, so each region sounds consistent.

How to choose fantasy country names

  • Give neighbouring countries names from the same language family (Vinterheim, Isenfjord, Nordskaal) so the map implies shared history, and switch families across mountain ranges or seas.
  • Write both a formal name (Holy Empire of Castellane) and the everyday short name (Castellane); characters use the short one, treaties and heralds use the long one.
  • Suffixes are cheap flavour: -mark for border regions, -holm for islands and strongholds, -ia for old civilisations, -reach for frontier land.
  • Name a few regions descriptively (The Saltlands, The Weeping Marches) rather than as nations; not everything on a map is a country.
  • Avoid names that clash with well-known real ones like Britannia or Camelot unless you want readers to import their associations.

Frequently asked questions

How do fantasy authors come up with country names?

Most borrow the sound of a real language family and adjust it: Tolkien's Gondor and Rohan draw on Sindarin and Old English, George R. R. Martin's Westeros and Dorne echo English and Iberian place names. Picking a real-world source language and applying its typical suffixes gives your names internal consistency.

What suffixes are common in fantasy country names?

-ia (Eldoria, Silvaria) for classical or Latinate realms; -land and -mark for Germanic kingdoms and borderlands; -holm for islands and strongholds; -vale, -reach and -moor for regions named after landscape; and -stan, -abad or -kand for Persian and Central Asian flavour.

Should a fantasy country name include its type of government?

The formal name usually does (Kingdom of Aldmere, Republic of Corvenna, Sultanate of Qamar) because it tells the reader who holds power. Day-to-day, characters just say Aldmere, the same way people say France rather than the French Republic.

Can I use these fantasy country names in my novel or game?

Yes. The invented names are free to use in fiction, games and commercial worldbuilding. A few on the list are historical or literary (Albion, Mercia, Ruritania, Hyperborea) and are public domain, though they carry existing associations.
