Kinship names for The Lord of the Rings Online: Bree-land watches, Hobbit societies, Dwarf halls, Rohirric éoreds and Elvish names with a gloss, such as Wardens of the Greenway, The Second Breakfast Club and Hammers of Erebor.

About LOTRO kinship names

A kinship is the player guild of The Lord of the Rings Online, and its name is shown with every member's name, so it has to read as part of Middle-earth. The surest pattern is the one Tolkien used for his own companies: a plain collective noun tied to a place or an emblem. Wardens of the Greenway, Riders of the Wold, Lanterns of Imladris and Hammers of Erebor all tell a stranger where a kinship comes from and what it does.

The list is built in sixteen styles that cover each free people and most regions: Bree-land watches, Hobbit societies, Ranger companies of the North, Elven houses, Dwarf halls, Beorning lodges, Rohirric éoreds, Gondorian companies, crafting and music kinships, raiding names, travelers' names, and jokes that still read as in-world. Names in Sindarin, Quenya, Khuzdul or the speech of Rohan are phrases from Tolkien's writing or simple pairings of attested words, each with an English gloss in parentheses.

A small share, marked "from the books", are Tolkien's own named companies, such as The Grey Company. They are here as style models. The game asks for names that fit the lore, and its naming policy may refuse canon names, so treat those as patterns to adapt. The parentheses are notes for you, not part of the name.

How to choose LOTRO kinship names

  • Match the name to the people your kinship mostly plays. A hall or a forge suits Dwarves, an éored or a muster suits Rohan, a society or a league suits Hobbits, and a mixed kinship does well with a region or a road instead.
  • Drop the gloss when you create the kinship. Mae Govannen (Well Met) is entered as Mae Govannen, and the meaning can go in your kinship's message of the day. If the name box will not take an accent, a comma or a hyphen, enter the name without it.
  • Swap the place, keep the pattern. If Wardens of the Greenway is taken on your world, the same shape works with any road, ford, hill or hall your kinship calls home.
  • Say it the way it will be used: "we are the Hedge-wardens of Bree" or "join The Elevenses Society". A name that is awkward to say or to shorten in chat will be replaced by a nickname you did not choose.
  • On a roleplay world, pick a joke that a Hobbit could have made. The Half-pint Heroes passes in character, and a reference to the modern world does not.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kinship in LOTRO?

A kinship is the game's name for a player guild: a lasting group with its own chat channel and roster. Players found them for raiding, crafting, music, roleplay or plain company, and the name usually says which. Names like The Prancing Minstrels or The Bywater Skittles Team signal a social kinship, and Bane of Carn Dûm signals one that wants a fight.

Can I use a name from the books, like The Grey Company?

Probably not as it stands. The game's naming policy asks for lore-appropriate names and may refuse the names of Tolkien's own characters and companies, and a famous one is likely to be in use already. The entries marked "from the books", such as The White Council and The Nine Walkers, are there to show the pattern, so change the color, the number or the place.

Is the Elvish in these names real?

The Elvish entries are phrases Tolkien wrote, such as Mae Govannen (Well Met) and Utúlie'n Aurë (The Day Has Come), or simple pairings of words he attested, such as Gwaith Imladris (People of Rivendell). The gloss gives the usual English reading. This part of the list is small on purpose, and a gloss is a reading aid, not a ruling on Tolkien's languages.

Will a joke name pass on a roleplay server?

It can, when the joke belongs to Middle-earth. The Second Breakfast Club, Bywater Pie Appreciation League and Short Cuts to Mushrooms are jokes a Hobbit would understand. Names that mention game mechanics, such as The Morale Bubble, suit a casual kinship better than a roleplay one.
