Generate place names for a Middle-earth style map, coined in the styles Tolkien used for each people: Emyn Luin and Cirith Forn in the Elvish manner, Wulfdene and Stanburg for Rohan, Brockhollow and Thistlebottom for the Shire, Ironhelm Deep for the Dwarves. A small share of well-known places from the books is included as reference points.

About LOTR place names

The maps of Middle-earth feel real because each people names the land in its own tongue. Elves and the Men of Gondor use Sindarin, usually a place word followed by a describing word: amon (hill), ered (mountains), cirith (pass), nan (valley), taur (forest), tol (island). Rohan's names are Old English, often modernized, hobbits use homely rustic English, and much of the wider map is plain Common Speech: the Misty Mountains, the Greyflood, the Last Bridge.

This list follows the same habits, and most entries are features of the land rather than cities: mountains, passes, rivers, fords, forests, downs, towers, havens, barrows and whole regions. Elvish-styled names such as Emyn Luin, Cirith Forn and Sîr Uial are put together from well-known Sindarin words in the style of the books; treat them as map flavor, not as sure translations. Dwarf halls use Common Speech or a Norse ring (Ironhelm Deep, Frosti's Forge), because so little Khuzdul is known. Mordor-side names are blunt Common Speech (Ashen Gap) or dark Elvish in manner (Carag Morn).

A small share, just under a tenth, is places from the books, such as Rivendell, Weathertop and Helm's Deep, kept as reference points. Everything else is coined for this page, so a reroll can fill a blank corner of a campaign map or a fan story.

How to choose LOTR place names

  • Match the language to the people who live there: Elvish-styled names for Gondor and the elven woods, Old English forms like Wulfdene or Earnholt for Rohan, rustic English like Brockhollow for the Shire.
  • Give an important place two names, as the books do: an Elvish-styled one for the lore-masters and a plain one for ordinary travelers, such as Mithduin beside the Grey River.
  • Name the features of the land before the settlements. A river, a range of hills and a forest give a map its shape, and villages can then borrow from them: a ford, a bridge, a wood's edge.
  • Keep the famous book places as anchors for private games and fan work, and pick coined names for anything you plan to publish.
  • Read a new name aloud next to its neighbors on the map. A region feels right when the places in it sound as if one people named them all.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real places from The Lord of the Rings?

Mostly no. A small share of the list is well-known places from the books, such as Rivendell, Edoras, Bree and The Lonely Mountain, included as reference points. The rest are new names written in the same styles and are not part of Tolkien's own geography. This is a fan-made list with no connection to the Tolkien Estate or the makers of the films.

Do the Elvish-styled names mean anything?

Most are built from Sindarin words found in Tolkien's own place names and word lists, such as amon for a hill, emyn for hills and cirith for a pass, and a handful follow the High-elven manner instead. Emyn Luin and Cirith Forn follow the pattern of Emyn Muil and Cirith Ungol. They are written in the style of the books and are not offered as exact translations, because Sindarin has sound changes that this list does not try to settle.

Why are the Dwarf halls not named in Dwarvish?

Tolkien's Dwarves kept their own language private, and only a few Khuzdul names and words appear in the books. Inventing more would be guesswork, so the halls here are named the way outsiders would name them, in Common Speech or with a Norse flavor: Ironhelm Deep, Stonefather's Gate, Frosti's Forge.

What kinds of places are in the list?

The 1,000 names cover mountains and passes, rivers and fords, forests, hills and downs, marshes, towers and fortresses, havens, Shire villages, Rohan steadings, Dwarf halls, ruins, barrows and whole regions. Cities are only a small part of it. For Elvish cities, the Elvish City Name Generator has its own list.
