Generate Gondorian names in Tolkien's true style: Sindarin names for stewards, soldiers, and citizens like Boromir, Beregond, and Ioreth, and lofty Quenya names for kings of the line of Anárion. Includes canon characters plus new names built on real Elvish roots.

About gondor names

The men of Gondor are descended from Númenor, and Tolkien gave them names in the two Elvish tongues their ancestors learned from the Eldar. Ordinary Gondorians of the Third Age, from stewards to soldiers, bear Sindarin names: Boromir, Faramir, Denethor, Ecthelion, Beregond, Damrod, Mablung, and Ioreth. These are typically two or three syllables and built from Sindarin roots such as bor (steadfast), mir (jewel), thor (eagle), and gond (stone). Names of the ruling stewards were often taken from the heroes of the First Age, which is why the list of stewards includes a Húrin, a Túrin, a Beren, and a Barahir.

The kings of Gondor, from Elendil and Isildur down to Eärnur, used the loftier Quenya of Númenor: Meneldil, Atanatar, Hyarmendacil, Telumehtar, Ondoher. Quenya names run longer, favor open vowels, and often carry an epithet of victory such as Rómendacil (East-victor) or Umbardacil (Umbar-victor). Aragorn, restoring the kingship, took the Quenya throne-name Elessar Telcontar.

Region and rank matter too. Men from Dol Amroth like Imrahil, Elphir, and Erchirion carry a trace of Elvish blood in their names, and Tolkien often identified lesser lords by their fief: Forlong of Lossarnach, Hirluin of Pinnath Gelin, Angbor of Lamedon.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use Sindarin-style names (Beregond, Iorlas, Hirwen) for stewards, soldiers, and everyday citizens, and reserve Quenya forms (Meneldil, Ondoher) for kings, princes, and ancient ancestors.
  • Build a new name from real Sindarin roots: gil (star), dor (land), thor (eagle), wen (maiden), ion (son), and hir (lord) can be combined into names like Gilrond or Menelthor.
  • Attach a fief or company for a lord or soldier, as Tolkien does: Duinhir of Morthond Vale, Beregond of the Third Company. It grounds the character in the geography of Gondor.
  • Give women names ending in -wen, -iel, -eth, or -is (Finduilas, Ivriniel, Idhriel, Meldis) to match Tolkien's feminine Sindarin patterns.
  • Avoid Rohirric names like Éomer or Théoden for Gondorians; the Rohirrim use Old English-flavored names and the contrast between the two peoples is deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

What language are Gondor names in?

Most Third Age Gondorian names are Sindarin, the Grey-elven tongue, such as Boromir, Faramir, and Denethor. The kings of Gondor and the ancient Númenórean nobility used Quenya, the High-elven language, giving names like Elendil, Isildur, and Hyarmendacil.

Why do so many stewards of Gondor share names with First Age heroes?

The stewards deliberately took names from the great Edain of the Elder Days, such as Húrin, Túrin, Beren, Barahir, and Hador, to honor their Númenórean heritage. Tolkien notes this in the appendices as a mark of the family's pride in its lineage.

What are good names for women of Gondor?

Tolkien's named Gondorian women include Ioreth, Finduilas, Lothíriel, Ivriniel, Morwen of Lossarnach, and Fíriel. New names in the same style usually end in -wen, -iel, or -eth, such as Hirwen, Idhriel, or Merileth.

Can I use these Gondor names in my own writing or game?

Yes for the invented names, which are free for personal and commercial use. Canon characters such as Boromir, Faramir, and Imrahil belong to the Tolkien Estate; use them for fan fiction, tabletop play, and inspiration, but not as your own published characters.
